Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders
Every ring I sell is handmade to order and fully customizable. Mix and match any wood species with any style of ring. Add precious stones or metals. Or dream up something entirely new. Nothing is too far out or crazy - in fact I love the challenge! Previous customizations have included ashes, upcycling old jewelry, distillery vats, sand, bullet casings, just to name a few! I would love to help create your perfect, personalized ring (and I don't charge extra for design). Reach out to get started.
Sizing details
All ring sizes are in US standard. The best method to determine your ring size is to visit a local jeweler. They will size your finger for free. If you are unable to get professionally sized, reach out and I will send you a ring size kit. If for any reason your ring does not fit, I am able and willing to resize up to a half size larger or half size smaller.
Care instructions
Wash as needed with non abrasive hand soap and water. Polish with Grown Rings Polishing Wax (provided with each order) or any plastics safe polisher. (If it's safe for plastics, it's safe for the protective clear coat on your ring.) Do not use metal jewelry polish, cleansers or abrasive compounds.
Lifting weights, gardening, rock climbing, and robot fist-fighting are all anti-ring activities. If your ring rubs against or collides with metal, glass or stone it may get scratched or broken. Chemicals may also pose a risk to your ring. Acetone, bleach, nail polish and solvents will damage your ring’s protective finish. As a general rule, if the activity or chemical suggests wearing gloves, then take your ring off first.
Where does your wood come from?
Grown rings are made from reclaimed and sustainable wood sources from all over the world. Historical restorations, artisans, carpenters and manufacturers all produce off cuts or expended wood products. Grown rings rescues wood and gives it new life. Sources include: Hardwood Long Bows from Arkansas (Osage), Major League Baseball game used bats (Hickory), antique stairs from a 1920s hotel in Los Angeles (Douglas Fir) and Jack Daniel's Whiskey Barrel from Tennessee (White Oak).
New sources are always welcome. If you have an idea for a source or access to wood that you would like made into a ring, please contact me anytime.
Can you use my own wood?
Yes, absolutely! The Grown Rings process is suitable for hard and soft woods. If you have a sentimental tree or wooden product, I can make it into a custom ring in any of the styles in my store.
Are your rings waterproof?
Yes. Grown Rings are sealed with multiple coats of a clear protectant that penetrates, strengthens and waterproofs. Your ring is safe to wear while washing your hands or taking a shower. Avoid abrasive hand soaps like Lava or body scrubs as they may scratch your ring.
Can your rings be resized?
Yes, on a case by case basis. Grown Rings can be resized up to a hlaf size up or down from their original size. (Example: a size 6 ring could be sized up to a 6.5 or down to a 5.5). If you order a size 8 ring and later decide that a size 8.5 would fit more comfortably, I'll resize your ring free of charge and only ask that you cover the cost of shipping.
How long do wood rings last? (Durabilty)
Carved, laminate and bentwood rings are strong in some directions but weak in others. Grown rings are different, and are meticulously engineered so that when properly cared for they can last a lifetime. I use a proprietary method to create 'Spiral Grain', as wood is strongest against the grain I engineer my wood so that every direction the ring might break goes against the grain. To the best of my knowledge I'm the only maker in the world who does it. Grown Rings have a crushing strength greater than precious metal rings of equivalent weight and are as scratch resistant as similarly mirror finished rings.
Wood furniture, houses and ships can last a hundred years or longer and with the appropriate care so can your ring!
How long does it take to make a ring?
Standard production time for my rings is two to four weeks, but if you need it sooner just reach out as I offer a Rush Upgrade and I can accomodate most tight deadlines.
