About

A few words about Mel Macklin

Mel Macklin is a kitsch-smitten, fairytale-fancying, pop-femme picture-maker from Melbourne. She lives vicariously through the girl-characters she draws, who are at once strong, thoughtful, adventurous, and always have awesome hair.

As a professional daydreamer, Mel spends her days drawing her imaginary friends and all the fearless heroines she loved best as a child. They are all inspired, among other things, by fairytales, anime, eighties cartoons, and everything awesome Mel has seen in her life to date. Since her heart belongs firmly to Pop Surrealism, all of Mel's girls have such big eyes- all the better to eat you with, my dear! . . . Or something like that, anyway.

Mel has been on many arty adventures all over the world; not once but twice attending the prestigious Bologna Children's Book Fair, and meeting with the kings and queens of the illustration world: Nicoletta Ceccoli, Eva Montanari, and Australia's very own Shaun Tan. She has taught, and been taught, in Darwin and London, where she spent two blissful summers attending classes at the famous Central St Martins school for the Arts. Mel has seen foreboding Caravaggio's in the gloaming of a church somewhere in Rome; gazed long on the glittering madness of Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights' at The Prado in Madrid; wondered at the enigmatic smiles of Da Vinci's subjects at the Louvre, and collected children's books, her most coveted possessions, in just about every major city in Europe.

In 2011 Mel was lucky enough to be awarded a place in the Top 20 of the Koko Black Easter Drawing Prize. In 2014, her Dolly Parton tribute art doll made it into the Top 12 Finals for the CAE (Centre for Adult Education) Reginald Portrait Prize for Softies.

When Mel isn't drawing, you might find her twirling her hair, pinning all of Pinterest, attempting to tame her twin half-beagle puppies, cuddling Dave, their hooman dad and master picture-framer, who thankfully sheds much less hair and walks on two legs, drinking far too much bubble tea than is strictly good for a person, or daydreaming about the many wonderful things she will draw next.

Payment
♥ "I'd like to buy something from your shop. How can I pay for it?"

I accept payment via PayPal, MasterCard, Visa, and Etsy Gift Cards.

If you choose to pay via ECheque, please ensure your bank will allow such payment. This can take a few days to clear, and, like all my orders, I will wait until yours has been marked 'paid' before I ship it. Please be aware that this may alter estimated shipping dates, so do allow plenty of time if you need an order for a special occasion :-)
Shipping
♥ "I just bought something! When are you going to post it?"

Thanks so much! You rock!

I ship treasures Monday - Friday, around 3-5pm Melbourne time.

Mostly, as soon as I am notified your order has been flagged as 'paid', I'm whipping out the wrapping paper and readying your treasures for a safe journey to you! While most 'paid' orders are shipped within 24 hours of your purchase, I hope you will forgive me if it takes a little longer, up to the 3 days specified.

Now, this delay happens *very, very rarely*! On top of the artwork, I do all my own printing and packaging, all by myself! (Hehe, I am not rich enough to pay an elf to help me just yet!) Oh, and did I mention I gift-wrap too?!

It's really important to me that I can present my artwork in it's best possible form- I want you to know what it feels like to go 'wow' when you open your parcel! There is no stuffing your precious treasures in an envelope and dumping them dispassionately at the Post Office- I will prepare them just as lovingly for their new home as I did when I was painting them for me. I like to think that's worth waiting for! ;-)

As soon as I have sent your parcel, I will send you a semi-automated shipping notification. Except for the tiny packets I use to ship jewellery, this includes a tracking number, so you can track your parcel's journey online, and an estimated arrival time.

Please do make sure that all of your address details are correct before checking out! I will address your parcel just as you give it to me, so unfortunately I can't take responsibility if it is sent to the wrong address!

♥ "How do you package your artwork?''

With just the same love and care as I have poured into making your treasures, I promise I will package them just as carefully. Prints are shipped securely inside a clear acetate pocket and sandwiched between 2-4 sheets of bend-proof foamboard.

All purchases arrive beautifully gift-wrapped and recinforced with foam-board so, unless they are forced with the weight of a mammoth, they will make it to you in perfect condition!

Packaging, gift-wrapping, and sourcing packaging materials does take time, and it does cost me money. For this reason, I do factor a packaging costs into your postage bill. I also take into consideration the fees I have to pay as an Etsy seller and PayPal user.

Dolls, necklaces and other delicate items are packed with protective wrappings and nestled in sturdy small boxes/ padded envelopes with adequate padding to ensure they don't jolt about on their way to you.

♥ "How long does shipping take?"

Your treasures will land themselves at your doorstep within 1-3 weeks, depending on where you are in the world. I send all my orders through Australia Post, via regular surface mail.

Generally from metropolitan Melbourne (where I live) to another metro city/ area within Australia, shipping takes 3-6 working days. If you live in a regional or remote part of Australia (some parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory in particular), shipping can take a little longer, around 5-10 working days. If you live overseas, postage can take up to 21-35 days.

If you need things in a real hurry, and you live within Australia, you can purchase Express Postage with this listing here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/215798053/express-shipping-and-rush-orders-using?ref=shop_home_active_7

This is using Australia Post Express satchels and will guarantee you next-business day delivery if you live within the Express Post network.

Please note though, I can't take responsibility if your parcel arrives later than an anticipated date, I'm sorry! The postal service is ordinarily awesome and timely, but it is quite out of my hands once I leave my parcels at the posts office. If you need something special by a certain date, please may I suggest you give yourself plenty of time :-)

♥ "Do you cover shipping taxes?"

Sorry international buyers, any taxes that might be incurred when you collect your treasures are your responsibility. If you have any questions about the customs forms either of us are required to fill out, please feel free to send me an Etsy conversation.
Refunds and Exchanges
♥ "Do you offer exchanges or refunds?"

All sales are final once they are marked 'paid'. I'm sorry, I can't take any responsibility for incorrect decisions or a change of heart :-)

In the event of damage or loss, I will happily replace lost/ damaged item/s in your order :-)

♥ "It's been a really long time and my package still hasn't arrived . . . "

I'm really sorry about that! I really appreciate your patience around the holidays when the postal service gets congested- I have lived in metropolitan London and remote Darwin, so I totally empathise and understand what it's like to haunt your letterbox, waiting for mail!

Obviously though, you know when things have taken an unreasonable amount of time, so do contact me via Etsy conversation if you're worried your parcel has gone MIA. I will organise a replacement order for you quicksticks!

♥ "What if my package is damaged?''

Once I have packed up your treasures and left them with the good people at Australia Post, I expect they will get safely to you. I will let you know when I have sent your package, and the anticipated arrival date.

If any issues should arise in the event of loss or damage, please contact me as soon as you can, with photos of the damage, so we can work together to fix the problem.

I have never had any issues sending items in the methods described above, but if you are at all concerned, you are very welcome to send me a conversation should you choose to purchase insurance at an additional cost.

♥ Received your package and have questions or concerns?

Please feel free to send me an Etsy Conversation. I really appreciate you letting me know if there's a problem with your order, and giving me an opportunity to amend it :-)
Additional policies and FAQs
♥ "I plan on buying a few things- do you offer a discount?''

Unless you'd like to discuss a wholesale arrangement for 15+ units of a particular treasure, I do not offer any further discounts to the prices listed.

Thank-you for understanding :-)

♥ "Do you offer wholesale?''

I can; please contact me via Etsy Conversation and tell me what you're thinking!

♥ "I love the character in a particular picture! If I were to order it, could you change her eyes/ hair colour?"

I'm sorry, I am unable to tweak existing artworks in this way. I offer limited editions of all my pictures. This means that each one is exactly the same, and there will only ever be a finite number of them in the entire world. Changing the eye colour of one print devalues the rest of the edition.

I sort of feel like it makes my girls into kit dolls with interchangeable parts, and I don't like this idea at all! To me, they are much more autonomous and unique :-)

People often tell me how much my characters remind them of someone they love, so I do understand why you might want to ask. It's best to remember though, that I firstly make the artwork for myself, as a character that I dreamed up. This character is special precisely because she has particular physical features- she is unique in all the world and does not have interchangeable parts. Replicating an artwork and just changing eye/ hair colour, to me, takes the craftsmanship and passion out of the artwork.

If you're looking for a gift for someone special, it might be best to find an artwork that captures the spirit or personality of your loved one, over a faithful physical likeness :-)

♥ "Do you do custom work?''

At this present time, I am only taking on logo design, branding and corporate illustration projects.

For the indefinite future I will not be taking on private custom work, including portraits or pet portraits, sorry!

♥ Got a question I haven't answered here?

Please feel free to send me an Etsy Conversation anytime. I generally am able to reply within 24 hours :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my shop policies! :-)
