About

MODERN | RUSTIC | HOME

Hi there, my name is Megan. My family and I are the people behind Habitat Handcrafted, a modern rustic home design company. We design and create everything out of our home studios in small, highly curated collections to ensure good design and quality are at the forefront. The marriage of modern and rustic aesthetics is the backbone behind our pieces. We strive to create a colorful, modern farmhouse look that embraces our Iowa roots and adds sophistication to even the most modest of materials.

I started this business in May 2012 as a way to share the beauty of the farm that I grew up on in central Iowa. With my husband's woodworking background, he helped me create a small line of timber candle holders that celebrated the natural beauty of the wood while embracing a clean, modern design. We continue these candle holders today and sustainably harvest the wood by hand from the family farm.

A few months after I started, I began to dream of making my small little business into a multi-faceted company that offered handcrafted pieces in all mediums that celebrated a modern rustic aesthetic. My mom, Julie, joined us shortly after and is the maker behind our pillows and other textile goods. Over thirty years of experience in sewing and textiles made her a valuable partner. She and I love to source new materials and dream up the designs for our annual Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections. Much of our materials come from central Iowa businesses and other Etsy sellers in an effort to support our local economies.

In May of 2014, my husband, Jarod, began designing and building furniture for family and friends. His passion for woodworking began as a child, learning earnestly from his grandfather in a small basement workshop. Those are some of his favorite childhood memories and have rekindled his passion for furniture-making. We have sold several pieces locally and hope to expand this in our online shop.

We have the most amazing clients from all over the world and we are constantly blown away by how small the world is when we're all connected through design. Custom orders are one of our favorite things to do and requests are always welcome. The three of us have big plans for our small little company and passion enough to pursue them all. We hope you'll join us on this journey by visiting our shop or following us on social media.

Thank you so much for your support.
