The Alternative Jerusalemite
Ever since I was little, I wanted to be an author. I remember being around 7 years old and writing stories about my cat on my old Hebrew typewriter.
In college, every person was their own individual with clothes, lifestyle and beliefs that were their own. It was through this environment that I learned about the alternative lifestyle of feminism, riot grrrl, handmade art and DIY, and I wanted in.
In 2005, I graduated from university with a degree in journalism. That same year, I spent four months in Jerusalem interning at the Jerusalem Post. I fell in love with the bohemian lifestyle of Jerusalem, the street performers, the art festivals, and the magical nightlife the city had to offer. But being unable to find a journalism job, I started getting more interested in self-publishing, and in 2007, I published the first issue of my first zine – Fallopian Falafel. I wanted this zine to reflect upon various feminist issues within Israel and also introduce the riot grrrl culture to the people of Jerusalem. I got many contributions from Israel and from around the world. I loved reading opinion pieces and seeing artwork by women from different backgrounds come together in a single issue. I also wrote my own pieces, personal accounts, articles about people and organizations in Jerusalem – the Jerusalem Rape Crisis Center, the Jerusalem Open House (a LGBT organization), breast cancer organizations, etc.
My purpose with Fallopian Falafel was to give women a chance to express themselves about issues that affect them. It was also important for me to get my stories and opinions out there, to improve my psycho-emotional state by being vocal about my experiences and owning them through my byline. It was especially powerful through issue 10 of Fallopian Falafel about sexual violence, which I sold in order to donate the profits to the Jerusalem Rape Crisis Center.
All 16 issues of Fallopian Falafel are witty, cheeky, profound, empowering, inspiring, touching, and all around awesome, reflecting the awesomeness of the contributors as well as the readers!
All issues (except for number 13) were laid out by computer programs. But once I tried DIY, scissors and glue production, I realized how much more challenging yet amazing the DIY style of cut-and-paste is. This was how I decided to start a zine that would be solely DIY, my perzine, Purple Myrtle Squeegy, or PMS.
PMS is a perzine about my experiences being an alternative writer, zinester, riot grrrl, metalhead living in a city that is considered by most to be nothing more than a religious city, full of priests, rabbis, and imams, and perhaps the occasional camel or two.
I write about things that I like – music, feminism, activism, the metal community, the punk community, my love for DIY, art, writing, books, horror, travel, snail mail, feminist literature, spirituality, and more.
In 2012, I took part in a riot grrrl band we called Mistress Distress. We wrote and composed a few songs and recorded an EP in a space of a couple of days. This EP is given out for free with a purchase of a Fallopian Falafel care package or a PMS care package!
I also participated in the International Zine Month activities, including the 24-Hour Zine Thing. Some of the PMS issues were made during those 24 hours.
I gave out some of my productions during feminist events such as JRCC fundraisers and Slutwalk Jerusalem, as well as in LGBT events including Jerusalem Pride. I strongly and actively support these movements
Throughout all the years that I produced zines, until today, with every issue that I released and every art work I produced, my love for DIY would deepen, and my inspiration for further zine production increased exponentially.
I opened this store with the purpose of spreading the love for DIY, feminism and riot grrrl, and hope that readers will be receptive to it as we may share a common love for handmade crafts, DIY, activism, and an alternative lifestyle.
I am also open to trades. You can contact me directly through this website.
