I can't recommend Hadley enough. She was a true professional--always kept me informed, made sure I was happy with her work in progress, was genuinely friendly, and sent my mug off in very secure and gift-ready packaging. She really captured my cat Frida perfectly (purrfectly)!

About

Hadley Clay Studio

My ceramic studio is located steps from my home on Whitemarsh Island, a small island off the coast of Georgia. I designed the building and had it constructed when my husband and I bought our house in 2010. The studio is 240 square feet of workspace. Attached to the structure is a screened-in porch housing my kilns and shipping materials. The studio’s large windows overlook a vast marsh that inspires a sense of serenity and well-being--perfect for creative work! I've been very lucky to establish a work space that is next to my home. It allows me to hold flexible work hours and attend to the many stages of the process throughout the day.

I approach my work primarily as a sculptor rather than a traditional potter. I build everything by hand and rarely use a wheel, which gives my pieces more uniqueness and individuality. Making things from this point of view gives me the freedom to try new techniques and work spontaneously. The work itself is only one aspect of my business, I oversee all stages of the process, from the work to the photography to customer service and the shipping. Maybe one day I'll be able to have other people do some of these things for me, but it's been a invaluable experience to learn how to do these things myself. I hope you will see something special when you visit my shop.

After receiving a BFA from Herron School of Art, I moved to an island off the coast of Georgia with little more than my kiln, two dogs, and a dream. Since 2009, I have been working full-time creating limited edition ceramic goods from my home studio.

Frequently asked questions

What is the expected turn-around time for a custom order?

I take orders on first-come-first-served basis. Considering the time my ceramic process takes, the volume of orders I have in queue, and the care that I give each individual piece it's about 4-6 weeks to complete.

Are the mugs lead-free?

Yes! All of the mugs are created using non-toxic, food-safe materials.

Sizing details

The mugs are standard sized, holding 14 fluid ounces. A "jumbo" upgrade is available in my shop to translate any design to an 18 ounce mug.

Care instructions

All mugs are dishwasher safe. The colors will not scratch, peel or fade. With the exception of the 22K gold additions on specific mugs, they are microwave safe.
The nature of ceramics is fragile, as it can break if dropped or knocked against a hard surface.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All mugs include a kraft gift box. You may order gift wrap service to any item through the gift wrap listing in the shop.

What if I want to change the way my custom order looks?

I keep customers involved throughout the process and go to great lengths to make sure people get what they want.
If the coloring is not a perfect match I can touch it up and add it to my next glaze firing free of charge.
If the issue is not on my end (e.g. you changed your mind about the photo you gave me or you ordered the flower crown variation but didn't want the flower crown after all.. etc.) I charge a remake fee of $20, the labor is free it just covers the cost of materials, overhead (power used to fire the kiln), and restock of unwanted inventory.
