Custom order for several family members who are new to the world of kanzashi. These were perfect. Light and durable. Perfect for everyday wear. Gorgeous craftsmanship and coloring. Thank you ladies!

About

Handmade Kanzashi by hantsukuri

Actually, this shop is run by two people, Mei and Tara. We also have a lovely marketer named Quyen in Texas; have you had the pleasure of speaking with her? ♥

I love the way fabric feels, and the vast variety in different kinds of fabric, even the variation between different silks. It's fun to see how different fabric folds, but my favorite is still habutae silk or charmeuse. ♥

I started making kanzashi in university when I was enrolled in a fiber arts class. I wanted to find something to do with all the glorious silk I was dying, and since I specialize in Japanese Culture, kanzashi seemed like a good choice.

I speak fluent Japanese, though my native language is English. I studied Japanese Culture for my BA and have a MSc (masters of science) in Japanese Studies from an old university in England.

I look forward to making a kanzashi just for you!

I design, photograph and make the kanzashi. Tara, of course, has her fingers involved in much of the process. I enjoy folding the petals and creative new designs!

I help make the "hair things" (clips, combs, prongs etc). I especially enjoy the hand dying process! I also paint and draw little sketches of our work.

Frequently asked questions

Gift wrapping and packaging

Your handmade tsumami zaiku (kanzashi, or hair pin) will be shipped to you wrapped in tissue paper in an organza bag. Your shipping box doubles as a gift box. It is a sturdy, but pretty box with a lid. The color and design of the box varies by size.

Care instructions

Your hair pin should be stored in a dry place and in low humidity. Where possible, keep your kanzashi with some silicon gel bags or other de-humidifying products. Also, because the hair pins are silk, if you have cedar blocks, you may store them in your hair pin box.

Do not get your hair pin wet. Should it get a little wet, you can reshape the petals while still damp. Gently, and with clean hands or not-very-sharp tweezers, shape the silk into its shape.

Custom and personalized orders

I always welcome custom orders! However, my custom order schedule may be quite busy at times, and may not allow for rushed orders. Please give me pleanty of time to design and create your custom hair pin. Otherwise rushed orders (12 days or less) are subject to a surcharge.

Downpayments for custom orders

For custom orders over $50.00 USD, I do require a 50% down-payment. This is nonrefundable. HOWEVER, I will do my best to please! Thank you!

Mailing to another address:

If you would like to send an order to a friend, please make a note when you purchase. I will ship to wherever you like-- as long as the post office goes there. :)

Shipping charges

If I ever overcharge your shipping by more than $3 (the cost of the gift box), I will refund you the difference. Please do not hesitate to purchase upgraded shipping either-- I will definitely refund you if it actually costs less than anticipated!
