Quilting is my passion, and I make beautiful, one of a kind quilted items including Christmas Advent Calendars, decorative holiday towels, and holiday table runners.

Welcome to Handmade by Hurtte. I am a retired high school English teacher turned quilt maker. My obsession with quilt making began when my only child, my thirty-year-old daughter, finally met the man of her dreams and announced her engagement. I had carefully stored my wedding dress for thirty-eight years awaiting the day I could hand it down to my only child. I nearly wept with excitement. My sweet daughter took one look at my 1981, Lady Diana-esque, puffy-sleeved wedding dress with a big bow on the backside and said with a smile, "No thanks, mom."

I turned to Pinterest and searched for ideas for recycling an "unwanted" wedding dress. I mean, if my daughter didn't want it, why was I holding on to it? One pin suggested I turn my wedding dress into a quilt. I had never tried my hand at quilting before, but I had an older model, basic Singer sewing machine and a decent bit of sewing experience. I watched hours of YouTube quilting videos and then boldly cut my wedding dress into four inch squares. I was immediately hooked on quilting beyond all sense and reason. I wanted to take all the wedding dresses in all the world and turn them into monogrammed baby quilts for every bride's first born. What a great photoshoot and keepsake that would be.

I tried all manner of fabric colors and quilt patterns and even designed some patterns of my own, but I owe a huge thank you to all those wonderful quilters out there who post help, advice, and training videos on You Tube, Blogs, and Pinterest for us quilting rookies. Everything I know about quilting I learned from these amazing, generous, and talented women. Everything I produce is made in the odor free, non-smoking, pet hair-free sewing suite located in my home. I hope if you choose to purchase an item from me that you will love it as much as I enjoyed making it.
