Artist/Designer, Denise Nicole Francis was born and raised in a small country town in central Florida called Titusville. However she was brought up in a Caribbean atmosphere as both of her parents are from Antigua W.I. She found her love for art and creativity in the sixth grade at a small private school in her hometown. Although she as taken classes in various forms of art including ceramics, painting, 3-d sculpture and mixed media she considers herself to be mostly self-taught.
“I have taken courses here and there but most of the classes I participated in required self motivation and discipline. Although tasks were assigned, most of the time techniques were experimental.”
She continued to consider and peruse her art as a hobby through out middle, high, undergraduate and graduate schools, even though her path was not directed towards visual artistry during that time. While finishing a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Master of Architecture at Florida A&M University she embarked upon an internship in Atlanta Georgia.
“I didn’t even want to go to Atlanta. The internship was a last minuet decision because one of my professors called in a favor for me without even asking me if I wanted to go. I was lucky enough to have family to stay with there and two days later I was packed and ready to spend the entire summer working for the National Park Service. During that summer I learned a lot about historical preservation. However, that summer was a landmark in my memory of when I fell in love with Atlanta Georgia. I think what put me under the spell was the underground soul music and dance scene, which led to all of the other cultural things that Atlanta, has to offer. The soul artists of Atlanta have widely contributed to my inspirations. I guess they are my muses.”
Now residing in the Atlanta area, Denise continues to draw inspiration through her unique style of observation. These observations are critical to her perspective of the human condition, the environment, and spiritual connections that are all expressed through her artistry.
Recently she graduated with a MFA graphic design degree at Savannah College of Art and Design - Atlanta, and works as a creative designer for Grammy award winning singer/songwriter India.Arie.
