About

My background in glass...

I'm a glass designer / maker based in a little town called Stafford in the UK although originally from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. I design handmade glass items such as homeware, jewellery and one-off hand painted fused glass pictures.

I've always been fascinated with the idea of creating. From an early age all I wanted to do was draw and paint. I remember when I was little our parents coming up with an idea of having a ‘drawing competition’ for me and my friends - presumably to keep us quiet for 10 minutes! Although in the rules of fairness there never really was a winner but it never stopped us trying to impress our tiresome folks.

I began working with glass in 2003 as I studied at the University of Wolverhampton. It was here that my passion for the material erupted! I actually specialised in glass blowing, I was only after my studies that I gravitated towards fused glass. Prior to University I'd never worked with glass before but there was something about it that that excited me. The way it behaved when heated up and cooled down (sometimes – not on purpose!) was amazing.

I decided to take a short course in glass fusing and painting a few years ago. It’s here where I begin working with glass enamels. In turn this has lead me onto finding my own style and creating beautiful landscape paintings that I feel very passionate about. I love the freedom of working with this medium. It gives me the ability to add finer details to my work.

I take my inspiration from a number of sources; places I visited as a child, unique holidays or places I will hopefully one day visit as well as the glass itself. I also have a great love of black and white photography which has influenced the style of my work. I create my black and white pictures by hand painting with glass enamels. Depending on the piece I will sometimes overlay glass frit on the base layer to build up the first layer of colour. I then paint multiple layers by hand piece firing each layer individually ready for the next. On some pieces this means they could be fired up to 6-7 times to create the final picture.

My volcanic themed pictures are created using specially selected Bullseye glass. I always try to source glass that best illustrates my ideas and work with it to create unique backgrounds to build upon. Alternatively I create a background colour from scratch with the use of glass frits. I then use these again to establish detail as I build up the layers and create depth within the piece. My trips to the Aeolian Islands and their powerful volcanoes inspired me to begin this body of work. On my last trip I took a trek up to the crater of Stromboli to experience first-hand its glorious natural fireworks.

I’m happy to create custom pieces. If you see something you like in my Etsy shop but you would prefer a different colour or style just get in touch via Etsy convos and we can discuss custom making something just for you! I’ll always do my very best to try and accommodate.

Thanks for your interest in my work.

Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to do something creative! Etsy has helped me do this. I work full time in an office along side running my Etsy shop. I hope one day to be able to create my glass full time! *dreams...*
