Announcement   Welcome! I paint only my own original designs for hand painted glassware, champagne and wine glasses, and jewelry and keepsake hat boxes. My hand-painted bridal, wedding and hostess gifts and favors, home decor and storage boxes can all be customized and or personalized to your needs.

I discretely initial each piece as an original work. Also, I generally paint free-hand (without patterns, templates or decals), because I think the result is fresher and, well, just more fun to have and to hold! This also guarantees that each item is truly one of a kind.

REPLACEMENTS AND ADD-ONS;
If you'd like additional glasses or to replace one that broke during use, just send me the approximate date of purchase, name of purchaser, description and quantity needed. Photos are appreciated, so I can match as closely as possible to the original set. I'll set up a Custom Order listing and email you the link for your replacements/add-ons; when I receive the order confirmation, I'll add it to my schedule.

I always guarantee my work and welcome custom orders. Note the recommended care for painted glassware, as I do not recommend placing in dishwasher since some soaps could (eventually) affect the color or finish; bleach is a common ingredient in dishwasher soap.

You'll see that my shop sections will guide you for easy browsing.

Today I'm painting the finishing touches on this Succulents box.. fun to see how it all comes together at the end!
I finished this custom anniversary gift set, and it turned out so beautifully that I've relisted it with additional stemware and color choices.
Congratulations to all those celebrating anniversaries!
In progress photo of a dual anniversary card/memory box with matching set of crystal wine and champagne glasses. I love this rich combination of reds, gold, and amber.

About

Thorns Yield to Roses

A brain injury received in a car accident in January, 2000, led to my learning to paint, and has been a blessing in many ways. After the accident, my "brain dents" left me unable to read or write. (I prefer the term "brain dents" instead of "brain injury" because it's much less frightening and off-putting).

During my recovery, my wonderful husband, Tim, began to bring me flower magazines so I could look at the “pretty pictures,” which inspired me to want to have a flower garden. Sometimes, understanding the directions on the seed packets took longer than planting the seeds. I couldn’t always garden, but simply touching the earth had a very calming effect. At summer’s end, the flowers faded, and I decided to try painting flowers since the Colorado winter was approaching.

During my rehab, I was particularly drawn to roses; it seemed that references to roses were guideposts while I recovered -- one person sent me a poem by St. Theresa (patron saint of roses), I clipped a cartoon by Ziggy with the Abraham Lincoln quote below, while I visited my son I wandered into Balboa Park's famous rose garden (I'd gotten lost!)

I began learning slowly and one night, I proudly posted a newly-painted rose on the refrigerator and asked my son what it looked like. When he replied, “It’s a red rose...” I was so excited — just like a kindergartner! Sometimes I still get discouraged from the brain dents but the creative process and tactile nature of painting has been an important part of my recovery thus far.

In 2005, we discovered that the mile-high altitude in Boulder, Colorado was slowing down my recovery, so we moved to Texas then to San Diego to be closer to family.

My journey has allowed me to connect and share a part of myself with some wonderful people over the years, particularly through Etsy, for which I'm very grateful. To me, painting is a deeply personal expression and I take great care to do my very best on each piece, from prep to shipping.

I paint only my own original designs. I nearly always paint free-hand, without stencils, decals or patterns, and you'll feel confident that your purchase is truly one-of-a-kind! I discretely initial each glass as an original piece.

When I'm painting, I usually listen to music (lots of classical, nature, old rhythm and blues, blues, some classic rock). As I paint, I like to think about the recipient, and envision them opening the package and watching their expression.

Tim is the Partner in Charge of procurement, shipping, and chief listener and sounding board. Hand Painted Petals began as my therapy and hobby, and Tim facilitates operations and assists with growing the venture.

I am able to focus on my painting and feel proud yet humble to offer you my "Hand Painted Petals."

This quote from Abraham Lincoln sums up my journey and painting:

“You can complain because roses have thorns, or
You can rejoice because 'thorns' have roses.”

We've chosen to rejoice, and feel thankful and wonderfully blessed. My heart sings as I reach for the paint brush!

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

GLASSWARE AND CRYSTAL:
Glasses are usually top-rack dishwasher safe and the glassware paint is baked for durability. However, some dishwashers' high heat and chemicals in the dishwasher soap may dull or damage the glossy finish or colors.

So, I recommend hand-washing hand-painted glassware. When cared for as directed, my work is always guaranteed. Your glassware will be accompanied by a care tag with instructions and tips.

WOOD AND PAPER MACHE' BOXES:
Your box is sprayed with a non-toxic satin finish. To clean, just wipe with a soft cloth.

Custom and personalized orders

PERSONALIZING:
At this time, I do not charge an additional fee for most personalizing. For lengthy personalizations, a fee may be involved; please inquire.

For boxes, placement depends on the design and box configuration. If you have a preference, please let me know.

For glassware, I typically paint the lettering on the base of the glass.

FOR PERSONALIZING:
- Please specify the details in NOTES TO SELLER at check-out.
- For example: "Marge & John ~ June 30, 2016" or "Bridesmaid ~ Joey and Jessie" or "Happy 50th Anniversary, Marge & John"
- Returns of personalized items may not be possible (see Policies) unless it is my error.
