After an Accident, Thorns to Roses

I came to painting 'by accident' -- after a traumatic brain injury in January, 2000 led to my learning to paint. It has been a blessing in many ways although after the accident, my "brain dents" left me unable to read or write. (I prefer the term "brain dents" instead of "brain injury" because it's less off-putting).

During my recovery, my wonderful husband, Tim, began to bring me flower magazines so I could look at the “pretty pictures,” which inspired me to want to have a flower garden. Sometimes, understanding the directions on the seed packets took longer than planting the seeds. I couldn’t always garden but simply touching the earth had a very calming effect.

From the beginning of my rehab, I was particularly drawn to roses. It seemed that roses were guideposts while I recovered -- one person sent me a poem by St. Theresa (patron saint of roses), I clipped a cartoon by Ziggy with the Abraham Lincoln quote below, and while I visited my son in San Diego, I wandered into Balboa Park's famous rose garden after I'd gotten lost.

At summer’s end, the flowers faded. With the changing season, I was drawn to the crafts store -- specifically, the painting section. I slowly began teaching myself to paint. Affected by the brain dents, I didn't think to move the paints near the TV while I watched videos; I kept running up and down the stairs from kitchen table to family room, trying one stroke at a time. Yep, it took forever but it was early "multi-tasking": exercise and art class!

One night, I proudly posted a newly-painted rose on the refrigerator and asked my son what it looked like. When he replied, “It’s a red rose...” I was so excited — just like a kindergartner! Sometimes I still get discouraged from brain dents but the creative process and tactile nature of painting has been an important part of my recovery.

In 2005, we discovered that the mile-high altitude in Boulder, Colorado was slowing down my recovery, so we moved to San Diego to sea level and closer to family.

My journey has allowed me to connect and share a part of myself with some wonderful people over the years, particularly through Etsy, for which I'm very grateful. To me, painting is a deeply personal expression and I take great care to do my very best on each piece, from prep to shipping.

I paint only my own original designs and nearly always paint free-hand, without stencils, decals or patterns. Your item will be truly one-of-a-kind. I discretely initial each item as an original piece of functional art.

Although Hand Painted Petals began as my therapy and hobby, Tim now handles our inventory, shipping and helps with growing the venture. Ginger lets me feel safe, keeps me company and keeps my feet warm, too.

At last, I am able to focus on my painting and I feel proud yet humble to offer you my "Hand Painted Petals."

This quote from Abraham Lincoln sums up my journey and painting:

“You can complain because roses have thorns, or
You can rejoice because 'thorns' have roses.”

I hope you enjoy my work.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

GLASSWARE AND CRYSTAL:
Glasses are usually top-rack dishwasher safe and the glassware paint is baked for durability. However, some dishwashers' high heat and chemicals in the dishwasher soap may dull or damage the glossy finish or colors.

So, I recommend hand-washing hand-painted glassware. When cared for as directed, my work is always guaranteed. Your glassware will be accompanied by a care tag with instructions and tips.

WOOD AND PAPER MACHE' BOXES:
Your box is sprayed with a non-toxic satin finish. To clean, just wipe with a soft cloth.

Custom and personalized orders

PERSONALIZING:
At this time, I do not charge an additional fee for most personalizing. For lengthy personalizations, a fee may be involved; please inquire.

For boxes, placement depends on the design and box configuration. If you have a preference, please let me know.

For glassware, I typically paint the lettering on the base of the glass.

FOR PERSONALIZING:
- Please specify the details in NOTES TO SELLER at check-out.
- For example: "Marge & John ~ June 30, 2016" or "Bridesmaid ~ Joey and Jessie" or "Happy 50th Anniversary, Marge & John"
- Returns of personalized items may not be possible (see Policies) unless it is my error.
