Welcome to Hankie Chic! All my fashion doll dresses are sewn entirely by hand -- that's right, just needle and thread and my ten fingers -- no sewing machine in sight! Each dress is meticulously stitched from a vintage hankie, and fully lined, so it's truly one of a kind!

My fit model is the Silkstone Barbie, but most dresses will also fit other 12" fashion dolls such as vintage Barbies, model muse Barbies, Poppy Parker, Victoire Roux, Fashion Royalty, Color Infusion, Elyse Jolie, etc. I own Silkstone, model muse, collectible, and vintage reproduction Barbies, as well as Poppy Parker, Victoire Roux, and select Fashion Royalty dolls. Please contact me if you would like to see photos of any of the dresses in my shop on one of these doll body types.

I also enjoy refurbishing doll furniture and making some 1:6 scale miniatures for you to enjoy!

Vintage hankies and Barbies are a match made in heaven

In the spring of 2012, I was trolling JoAnn Fabrics (as I love to do) and came across the book, Hankie Couture, by Marsha Greenberg. Marsha has been making Barbie dresses for years from vintage hankies and this book was chock full of charming little dresses. It was love at first sight. I started flipping through the book and the next thing I knew I was at the check-out line with it. Then I directed my husband to the nearest antique store and started stocking up on vintage hankies so I could design my own Barbie dresses.

And of course, I didn't own a Barbie doll, so I had to buy one ... or two ... or 70. (Because after all, each dress has to have it's own Barbie!) I started designing for the Barbie Basics dolls, which have the model muse body type. Then I eventually branched out to some other collectible Barbies and then discovered the Silkstone Barbies (my new love!) in my forays on Pinterest.

I've been collecting vintage sewing patterns from the '40s and '50s for years, so I draw a lot of inspiration from those. And now I've branched out into collecting vintage Barbie sewing patterns. I use a variety of patterns in my Barbie dresses -- some I've made myself, and some made by others. And it's fun to take a bodice from one pattern, a skirt from another, and then add new sleeves to create something totally unique.

It takes about a week to make one hankie dress. That sounds like a long time for something so small, but remember, I'm sewing them by hand, they're fully lined, and I only sew in the evenings after I get home from my day job.

I love working with the vintage hankies -- there are so many fabulous designs -- each one is a work of art all by itself. I find it challenging to make to the best use of the design in the hankie while still making a stylish dress that I'd like to wear. And it's so fun to search for vintage hankies in antique shops, eBay, and Etsy!

I started this Etsy shop, Hankie Chic, in February 2013 ... mainly because I was running out display space for more Barbies in my house! (But I'm thinking I can squeeze in a few more....) Also, having this business kind of justifies spending money on Barbie dolls, don't you think?

I'm often asked to make my Barbie dresses life-size, but unfortunately, hankies don't come that large and I have no desire to make real people clothes anymore. It's much more fun to design for Barbie!

As I set up dioramas to take photos of my Barbie fashions, I've been inspired to refurbish vintage Barbie furniture and make some 1:6 scale miniatures. See something you like in one of my photos? Chances are it might show up in this shop for you to purchase!

Thanks for stopping by my shop! I'd love to hear from you! --Sylvia

I love sewing by hand and my very first sewing project as a child was making Barbie clothes from leftover scraps of fabric I found in my Mom's sewing room. I'm still making Barbie clothes by hand, but now I use vintage hankies as my fabric.

Welcome to Hankie Chic, a boutique of one-of-a-kind Barbie dresses hand sewn from vintage linen or cotton hankies. Each dress is fully lined with cotton fabric and fastened with metal snaps. Please read the item description carefully to make sure the outfit you're purchasing will fit the body type of your 12" fashion doll. Fashions are made to perfectly fit the doll shown, but may also fit similarly sized dolls. Dolls, diorama items, and accessories like shoes and gloves are not included unless otherwise noted. I also make assorted miniature items for your fashion dolls, and refurbish vintage playscale furniture.

I also make sewing patterns for your 12" fashion dolls that you can download and print yourself. My patterns include detailed instructions, but if you ever get stuck, just message me and I'll help you figure it out.

I ship fashions in flat bubble envelopes. Larger furniture items are well-packed and shipped in boxes.

All items are made in a smoke free home. I do have a cat who likes to sit next to me when I'm sewing, so if you're highly allergic, you may not want to purchase from me.
