How to accidentally start a vinyl decal business...

I wish we could say that Hapa Designs was some well thought out and well planned company, but that would be too easy! I own a small specialty sporting goods company and we purchased a vinyl cutter in order to make camouflage stencils. Unfortunately, this is right about the time that the water printing process hit mainstream and anyone with a kiddie pool could print anything they wanted on their gear. The vinyl cutter sat unopened in the corner and I kicked myself for waiting 35 days to try and return it. Due to a 30 day return policy it was mine to keep.

A few months later my sister asked if we could make some decals for my niece's 1st birthday party. Thrilled to do something with the cutter I got to cutting vinyl like a madman. The decals were a hit at the party and people asked where they could buy them. Always the entrepreneur, I answered that I would be happy to take their order and Hapa Designs was born (actually we called ourselves J2S Vinyls but that is a different story)

All of this happened at just the right time as a month or two after we opened we saw a HUGE increase in sales of a single item, a pair of glasses that goes on your Mac laptop { Check it out here: https://goo.gl/FsxBVE ) we went from 3 to 4 orders a day to hundreds of orders a day. A call from my sister to tell me that our decal was featured on an Apple commercial for the MacBook Air blew me away. This huge volume of sales allowed us to expand the company and add custom embroidery, 3D printing, dog tags and custom banners. As of recently, dye sublimation printing, laser engraving and screen printing have been added to the rapidly growing list of ways to customize and personalize just about anything you can think of.

One thing that has stayed the same since the first day is our commitment to our customers. Our tagline, Bringing you the best products at the best prices with the best service, is not some marketing ploy, it guides us in every aspect of the business. We will never trade profits for service and quality.

I am always available to our customers, if you send an email on a Saturday night at 1:00am there is a good chance you will get a reply within minutes ( it is currently 10:52pm on a Friday night).

Please feel free to reach out if I can be of any service. We happily make donations to non profits and schools so please let us know if we can help out!

Thank you,

On January 1, 2012, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 (SB 657) went into effect in the State of California. Under the law, manufacturers and retailers are required to disclose their efforts to eradicate slavery and human trafficking within their supply chains. The law’s underlying purpose is to educate consumers, so they can make informed decisions and purchase goods from companies that responsibly manage their supply chains.

We hold ourselves and our vendors accountable to high ethical standards wherever we do business. The Hapa Group works diligently to ensure that our products are produced ethically by our suppliers and in accordance with The Hapa Group’s Standards of Vendor Engagement (“The Hapa Group’s Standards”), which The Hapa Group’s suppliers are subject to as a condition of doing business with us. The Hapa Group also undertakes enhanced compliance verification efforts for all vendors producing The Hapa Group owned-brand goods overseas.
As good corporate stewards, The Hapa Group will not work with any suppliers that engage in human trafficking and/or slavery. As part of our social responsibility program, we conduct audits which serve as a starting point to understand suppliers’ compliance infrastructure. Issues such as human trafficking, slavery, forced/prison labor and child labor are zero tolerance violations and The Hapa Group will not only not conduct business with suppliers having such practices, but will also report them. Our audits allow us to verify that all labor at our suppliers’ factories is voluntary.

As a condition of doing business with The Hapa Group, all of our suppliers warrant that the products they supply to The Hapa Group, whether private label brand or The Hapa Group owned-brand, are manufactured in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and standards – both of the United States as well as their country of origin. The Hapa Group’s Standards expressly prohibit our suppliers from utilizing any forced or compulsory labor. They also mandate that workers receive fair wages and benefits in compliance with all applicable laws. The Hapa Group will not do business with a vendor that fails to warrant such compliance. Moreover, The Hapa Group will cease to do business with a vendor who fails to live up to that promise, and will also take actions toward reporting them,
Verification of Product Supply Chains
The Hapa Group utilizes a risk-based approach, which takes into consideration the general conditions of the country where the product is produced. For example, our verification of social responsibility standards consists of:
1. Internal and external audits;
2. Random onsite visits at factories
3. Worker Interviews

The Hapa Group has a zero-tolerance policy regarding forced labor within our company, as well as in relation to our suppliers. If forced labor is found in a supplier’s factory, the factory is immediately deactivated from The Hapa Group’s approved factory list and any merchandise in production there will not be accepted.
The Hapa Group administers mandatory training for team members responsible for sourcing and merchandising decisions on an array of topics, including our Standards and Social Compliance responsibilities. We also require team members to comply with strict business conduct guides, which includes a review of our Standards. Our trainings emphasize strong social compliance management practices and focus on preventing and managing related issues, including human trafficking and slavery.
All Suppliers that sign The Hapa Group Code of Conduct must adhere to our comprehensive social responsibility requirements and are to follow all law and regulations in the jurisdictions in which our products are manufactured.

I use your information to provide the services you requested and in my legitimate interest to improve my services; and 2) Compliance with the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use. I use your information as necessary to comply with my obligations under the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use.

I generally keep your data for the following time period: 7 years.
Transfers of Personal Information Outside the EU
I may store and process your information through third-party hosting services in the US and other jurisdictions. As a result, I may transfer your personal information to a jurisdiction with different data protection and government surveillance laws than your jurisdiction. If I am deemed to transfer information about you outside of the EU, I rely on Privacy Shield as the legal basis for the transfer, as ZOHO is Privacy Shield certified.
Your Rights
If you reside in certain territories, including the EU, you have a number of rights in relation to your personal information. While some of these rights apply generally, certain rights apply only in certain limited cases. I describe these rights below:
• Access. You may have the right to access and receive a copy of the personal information I hold about you by contacting me using the contact information below.
• Change, restrict, delete. You may also have rights to change, restrict my use of, or delete your personal information. Absent exceptional circumstances (like where I am required to store data for legal reasons) I will generally delete your personal information upon request.
• Object. You can object to (i) my processing of some of your information based on my legitimate interests and (ii) receiving marketing messages from me after providing your express consent to receive them. In such cases, I will delete your personal information unless I have compelling and legitimate grounds to continue using that information or if it is needed for legal reasons.
• Complain. If you reside in the EU and wish to raise a concern about my use of your information (and without prejudice to any other rights you may have), you have the right to do so with your local data protection authority.
