Turning ordinary wood into extraordinary art.
I started this shop in 2012 after I had created more wall decor than my own home could handle. I am an analyst by trade who needs a creative outlet when I get home from my day job. Since my husband is a carpenter, he is consistently bringing home 'scrap' pieces of wood that would ordinarily be tossed in the trash. I had a hard time watching good trees go to waste, so I set out to make something out of them.
I use a variety of methods to turn these scraps into art. My primary tool is a woodburning pen. I make every piece by hand, completely freehand, so every piece is one-of-a-kind. My use of stain and paint brings uniqueness to the woodburning niche.
Some background on the name:
Happenstance is one of my favorite words. I think the literal definition is something like “a chance occurrence,” but to me I think the word sums up a lot of who I am (the planner and the artist). To me, “happenstance” is the combination of luck and circumstance. Of spontaneity and preparation. Of "hap" and "stance." And I think these two seemingly opposite traits come together in the art that I create.
I'm Stef, the owner and creator behind hap&stance. I live in Knoxville, TN with my carpenter husband Ben and my dog pal Baxter.
