About

Our Work, Our Process, and Us

Happy Kitty Ceramics products add whimsy to daily routine by elevating everyday objects with artistic and clever details that make their users smile. My handmade products vary in intended use, from teacups and coffee mugs, to planters and unique jewelry, and the occasional decorative sculpture when I can make one. The body of work is detailed, sculptural, and colorful, with a wide range of complexity between pieces. I mainly sculpt imaginary creatures, animals and humans, most of the time as functional vessels. Though my sculptural style is overwhelmingly cute on the surface, there is a touch of surrealism influencing my favorite pieces, which I like to describe as “grotesquely adorable.”

I started as an artist with 2D mediums, focusing on pen and watercolor illustration. I took up ceramics about 2 years ago and have finally found my niche. With 3 dimensions, I can express my concepts in a way I was never able to on a flat surface. Being able to create functional works of art that buyers intensely enjoy and will use for years to come is very fulfilling.

I wouldn't be doing this at all if I didn't have Jacob, my technically inclined and very creative partner. Thanks to his efforts, our process to produce Happy Kitty mugs includes a combination of slip casting and hand building. Jacob makes each plaster production mold from a pattern I sculpted using hand building techniques. We mix our own porcelain slip and execute the casting process in the garage, and I finish the pieces by adding the handle/tail and sculpting the facial details, making each piece different from every other one. The result is a consistent, high quality, and unique product. In addition to streamlining our production method, Jacob also contributes concepts, collaborates with me, and makes art shows and craft fairs a feasible undertaking, among other numerous tasks. With our complementary skill sets, we operate a functional small-scale ceramic (home) studio!
