Announcement   *Please note I no longer accept custom orders. The good news is everything is my shop is already made and ready to ship. What you see in the pictures is the item you receive. The bad news is I cannot make changes to any of the items or make them in different sizes, colors, etc., any more. Life as a Happy Walrus Mom is just too busy these days for me to be able to turn around the orders as quickly as you and I would like.*

What makes walruses happy? Cute things and happy kids, of course!

I have been sewing all my life and now I have two little girls who demand fun hats and purses for every mood, outfit, season, whim, etc. This shop started as a result of people asking where my girls got their cute hats, then the purses were added later.

The item you see is the item you get. My items are already made and ready to ship. I am no longer making custom orders. If you are ordering a hat, please check the size of the recipient's head first and be aware of my return policy (www.etsy.com/shop/happywalrus/policy).

Fleece berets have a bit of stretch and can fit larger heads including small adults, while other fabrics do not and are limited to their finished dimensions. Age recommendations on hats are just estimates because head sizes vary so much within ages. It is best to measure the head around the way you expect the hat to sit. In general, expect berets to be for elementary kids and up. Toddler bucket hats are for under preschool (but not newborns). Medium bucket hats fit most preschoolers. Large bucket hats fit elementary kids and up including small adults.

Every Happy Walrus hat is a handmade, one of a kind fabulous bit of fashion. They are all fully lined (although not really reversible) and are made to be worn by active kids (ie: they are squishable, washable, and super comfortable).

All items ship USPS.

About

Origin and Mission of Happy Walrus

I started sewing when I was a little girl because I saw the amazing costumes my grandmother was making for her fashion show – Marge McLennon’s History of Women’s Fashion – and I wanted to create unique and fabulous fashions for my dolls. What began as doll clothes turned into clothes for myself and then clothes for my daughters. Each of my girls is different, creative, and opinionated. And they love hats. I originally made hats for them as a way to finish off the fabric I bought for their outfits, so each hat went with an outfit, but soon the girls started wearing their hats based on their moods and rarely matched the hat to what they were wearing. They had found a way to express themselves in a way that could be changed as they changed. One day my older daughter will wear a dinosaur hat and the next it is a girly sashed hat then a furry beret. I love it!

I started Happy Walrus as a way to sell the excess of hats I started making and as a response to all the people who kept asking me where I got my girls’ hats from. My hope is to not only give myself a new creative outlet, but also to help other parents enable and encourage their kids to show off their individuality. Society often puts pressure on us to fit a standard mold and go with the flow, but it is important for us to identify who we are as individuals - what drives us, what excites us, what are we passionate about. Wearing a hat with a pattern that we can look at and smile about is such a small, simple way to bring joy and a sense of individuality to the life of a child. That is why I love doing custom orders. When parents tell me what their children love and ask for a hat matching their son’s or daughter’s interest, I feel honored to get to make that hat for them.

Etsy gives me a freedom I need right now. I have a chronic pain condition, but because of how Etsy is structured, I am able to work around it. I sew when my pain level is low and rest when it is high. I am able to be productive and financially contribute to my family, and my pain is not able to take over. Also, because I work from home, every day is “Bring Your Daughters to Work Day”. They watch me sew, help design new hats, model, participate in listing each item, accompany me to the post office to ship orders, and keep track of sales. They are a huge part of my business and are proud of every sale made. I feel very lucky to get to have this form of business to share with my daughters and for them to learn from.

I make my hats and purses to stand up to my own kids, and my girls are very active. Hats and purses get dropped in parking lots, thrown out of trees, and are often used to carry found treasures such as rocks, bark, worms named Cinderella. Scrunch the hats up, stuff them in a purse, leave them in the trunk, then throw them in the wash like a pair of jeans (which I often use as a material for just this reason!).

I'm the happy mother of three ranging from baby to middle schooler. I've been sewing just about my whole life and love making things to make children (and adults) as happy as a walrus.

Need to know how to buy things on Etsy? Here is a very thorough how-to: http://www.etsy.com/help/article/339
Shipping
All items ship USPS within 2 days of the order being placed. I will email you a tracking number as soon as your item ships (can only provide tracking numbers for USA addresses at this point, though). Please allow 5-7 business days for domestic delivery. International orders ship via First Class USPS mail so international orders usually arrive within 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately I am not able to guarantee a delivery time for international parcels and it may take longer. International buyers are responsible for any import taxes and duties their countries may impose on their orders.
Refunds and Exchanges
If your hat or purse is not what you expected or is the wrong size, return it within one week of receipt to receive a full refund. I recommend measuring the intended wearer's head before purchase just to be sure the hat will fit.
