About

HARLEM RAGSHOP 1934

HARLEM = The Harlem Renaissance

RAGSHOP = Abolition of slavery. Symbolism - From rags to fine clothing.

1934= Around the time of the Harlem Renaissance

I am a writer and an actress. I draw much of my inspiration from The Harlem Renaissance which during the 1920s and 1930s was also known as the "New Negro Movement".

During this time, the African American literary movement was building rapidly. Writers, poets, artists and musicians were using their art and intellect to challenge racism and stereotypes, to uplift the race and build an appreciation for the culture.

The Harlem Renaissance was a success and with it brought a boom of fashion trends. Women were wearing wide hats decorated with flowers and low-slung dresses with ribbons at the hip. Men wore wide-legged zoot suits, white gloves, wide-brimmed hats and sometimes leopard-skin coats which represented respect for their African heritage.

My grandmother taught me about The Harlem Renaissance at a very early age. It is a time in our history that has helped mold me into the writer, actress and vintage fashion lover I am today.

Because of my career, I have had the opportunity to travel all over the world. No matter where I go, I always find time to rummage through flea markets, estate sales and/or thrift stores. And sometimes when a TV show gets cancelled, I am invited to their clothing sale.

My husband was on a popular TV show for a number of years. So, I often find myself walking the red carpet. I often see actors in super expensive designer clothing and I think to myself, "they probably spent a ton of money and I could find them something just as perfect for more than half the price."

More often than not they would ask me about my vintage outfit. Sometimes they'd even ask if I would style them. But I don't have the time to take on individual clients. So, with the encouragement of my husband, I opened Harlem Ragshop 1934 on Etsy.

Now, because of Etsy and with the help of my mother, an antique dealer and stylist, I have a place for people to find unique, funky, stylish and one of a kind vintage pieces.

Everything that we post on Harlem Ragshop 1934 is handpicked. Everything sold is vintage and used. So, some items may have wear or minor flaws that we think make them more brilliant. So, please take note of this when considering one of our sweet pieces because we inspect each item thoroughly and we only buy what we would wear. So, please feel free to let us know if you have any questions about anything as we do not accept returns or exchanges.

From Bee:

I've been a fashionista in Hollywood, CA all of my life. From the time I started choosing my own clothes people have admired my sense of style and love for finding pieces that the average Joe won't choose. From India to Europe to the Carribean and back to America, I search for rad articles of clothing. I absolutely love what I do and I love helping you look and feel as fabulous and as special as you should.

We accept reasonable offers on all items.

Please read our shop policies before making a purchase. ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

PLEASE BE KIND. We are a small shop and can't afford to be ran like a department store.

Harlem Ragshop 1934 does not offer refunds or exchanges. We are able to keep our prices low because we do not have to deal with returns, exchanges, additional Etsy fees and shipping and handling prices. So, please take time to look at the pictures and ask us any questions that can help you make the right purchase. Make sure you love it before you buy it.

***Please do not contact us saying an item does not fit. We take extra time to measure all of our clothing. Please do not go by the size tag - go by the measurements as vintage clothing does not always match up to the sizes of today.

We hand pick everything that we put in the shop. We do not buy what we would not wear. All clothing is thoroughly examined. If there are missing beads or slight tears and rips, we chose it because we felt it was very easy to fix and/or it brings out the vintage character of the piece. We also do our best to let you know as much as possible about the item. We encourage questions and are happy to send additional photos.

PLEASE KNOW YOUR MEASUREMENTS. We do everything we can to give you measurements of the items and encourage you to ask questions. We are not a department store and cannot be responsible for sizing issues.

Please contact us immediately if there is an issue with your item. Harlem RagShop is not responsible for return shipping charges. And items must be in the same condition it was in when it was shipped and must have original tags attached if we accept a return.

If you would like us to add additional shipping charges, please contact us before you make a purchase so that we can change the shipping price.

We do not assume responsibility for shipping issues that are beyond our control such as if your package is stolen or delayed delivery due to some unforeseen circumstance beyond our control (Customs holding, national holiday, etc.)

We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
Additional policies and FAQs
Since vintage clothing is pre-worn and "used" keep in mind that they may have flaws and damages, that we may not have seen. When purchasing a used vintage apparel item it's normal to expect some natural wear of the item, due to the age of the garment and it's previous use.

We strive to provide you vintage in the best condition possible. Please refer to our VINTAGE CONDITION CHART before purchasing your order. If you have any specific questions about a vintage item, contact us on Etsy and we will be happy to give you a more detailed description.

NOTES ON FEEDBACK:

Your feedback is very very important to us.

If you are happy with your purchase, please leave us a good feedback. Thank you for your support!

If you are not happy with your purchases, please don't just leave a neutral or negative feedback. Convo us and we will put right the problem.

Thank you for helping us improve everyday.

PLEASE BE KIND. We are a small shop and can't afford to be ran like a department store. Please read the shop policies as you are agreeing to them when you make a purchase.

PLEASE NOTE: It can sometimes be difficult to pick up the exact colors of sequin items because of the reflection from the light and the beading and/or sequins. So, if you are looking for exact colors please don't hesitate to message us.

Thank you very much and happy shopping with HARLEM RAGSHOP 1934.

Love,

The Harlem Ragshop 1934 team!
