About

Don't quit your daydream

I've been waiting patiently for years for my little one to be old enough for me to work from home, being more than just a stay-at-home mom. To turn my hobbies and passions into a career.

A little backstory for you...

My hubby bought me a sewing and embroidery machine for my birthday in May 2011. I didn't have much time to pursue sewing, as I worked a full time job, and I was also a new knitter and that was my main hobby at the time.

Fast forward a few months to September, and I became pregnant with our daughter. I set out to learn to sew and use my embroidery machine so that I could monogram everything under the sun. (You know how we Southern women love to personalize our stuff!!)

A few years go by, and it's now 2013 and I've decided that I want to be a stay at home mom and have an embroidery business from home. So in February, I made a leap and bought a BIG machine. I bought supplies and everything I'd need to run a shop. But, I still hadn't quit my full time job yet.

It's now June 2013 and I've just become a SAHM to a spirited almost one year old. This girl is busier than I ever thought a child could be. I put my daydreams aside to focus on being a great mom, wife, friend, and family member.

During this time my grandmother (Dot) was very sick. I knew we likely wouldn't have much more time with her. I, along with other family members, helped out by carrying her to dialysis several times a week. This time was very special to me. My granny was the one that taught me to sew when I was five years old. I spent almost every weekend at her house when I was growing up. To be able to help her, and have her spend time with my daughter was priceless for me.

For months I'd been keeping my daydream on the back burner, but that didn't mean that I wasn't planning in my head. I needed a business name. As I was thinking and trying names on for size, one name came to me, and stuck in my head. Harper & Dot. My daughter and my grandmother. It was so perfect. The one that inspired me, and the one that taught me.

In January of the following year (2014), my beloved granny passed away. My desire to begin my business named in honor of her, grew. In April I registered my business name and made a Facebook page, but wasn't ready to take the leap just yet. A few months went by, and I let some friends and family know my plans, but it never took off, mostly because I couldn't find the time with an extremely active almost-2-year old, and also because I can be terribly shy (what!?!) and lack confidence. Once again, I set aside my plans.

Jumping ahead again, to 2016. My daughter turned 4. This age has finally been the magic number. I could craft WITH her, instead of around her. She became super interested in my projects and could hang out in my craft room while I worked. I told my hubby, I think this is it! I think I can finally try to open my shop that I've been waiting on for YEARS!

So that leads us to here! I've made products, I've taken photos, I've bit my fingernails from nervousness. But I've done it. I set up a shop. I re-published my Facebook page. I set up an Instagram account. I announced it on my blog.

Friends, I welcome you to my new venture, Harper & Dot. A shop of handmade and personalized gifts. I sew, I crochet, I embroider. This is only the beginning! I have so much more planned for the upcoming year to offer in my shop. Buntings, monogrammed pillow covers, t-shirts!

Harper & Dot is my dream, and I'd love to make something just for you! If you have an idea for something, message me, and let's see if we can create something unique together!

Thanks for visiting and if you've read this far, THANK YOU!
