headcasepress' Shop Announcement

Nestled in a basement at a small college on the North Shore of Massachusetts in 2007 Imposition Press thrived. The letterpress shop run by professor Sarah Smith was comprised of three antique presses and is where the seed that spawned so many ideas was planted.

Three years later and 83 miles down the road, in the historic mill town of New Bedford Massachusetts, the home of Headcase Press was established. The one-woman letterpress shop situated in a 100 -year-old former textile mill, is run by the printer, designer and owner Nicole Monforti, whose love of modern design and passion for history found expression in letterpress printing and jewelry made from letterpress printing materials. Marrying the old and the new, she utilizes antique metal and wood type and traditional printing methods to create modern, dynamic designs on vintage equipment. All printing is done on one of four letterpresses: a 1916 Chandler & Price platen, a mid 1940’s Heidelberg windmill, a 1935 Vandercook proof press and a 1953 Kelsey tabletop press. Combining varied interests, Nicole has created product lines such as the knit card collection and recycled letterpress type jewelry that push the boundaries of the craft. Steadfast in her belief that letterpress is an art to be celebrated and preserved; she enjoys sharing the skills that began her journey through teaching out of her studio.
