About HearingOutLoudShop

As a person growing up with a hearing loss, I've learned how to interact in the world a little differently. Hearing loss impacts communication, and it can be frustrating for many of us.

I remember getting my first hearing aid as an elementary student, and feeling a little embarrassed talking about it. For some reason, I wanted to call it something other than a "hearing aid" and my friend and I, using the first letters in "hearing aid," decided to call it my "haha." It only came in silly putty beige and the purpose was to make it less noticeable in my ear. And now I ask myself, "Why?!" Why do people choose glasses in fun bright colors, and my hearing aid looked like a wad of gum? Where was that feeling of stigma and shame coming from?

It was, and still is, so embedded in our society, that even children feel shame about their hearing loss.

Becoming a Teacher for the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing has given me opportunity after opportunity to break down the stigma of hearing loss, build a sense of pride in our unique identity and encourage children with hearing loss to become strong self-advocates.

I've been a creative person all of my life, having creative parents that encouraged making. Designing unique products for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities, I strive to add new designs to my shop that break down barriers, encourage a sense of pride, develop positive self-identity and build confidence for us all to become our own best advocates.

Some may call us hearing impaired.
I say we are hearing empowered!
