About

Hearth and Homestead - Our small farm's way of sharing traditional family values

Welcome to our little corner of paradise, where we carefully craft custom wooden items, one piece at a time.

We work and play here along with our children and chickens, gardens and geese, ducks, turkeys, dogs, cats, sometimes cows and pigs, maybe sheep one of these days... and lots of sunshine and wind.

Brad is a disabled and retired U.S. Army Infantry Paratrooper who served 25 years of active duty on several continents and in several combat zones, and does the woodworking.

I started building things when I was five years old, hand-sawing and hammering together a leaky birdhouse. I went on to making things such as a cherry wood rocking cradle and large secretary desk when in High School shop class. Over the years I have built a wide range of things, including our 10-foot long dining room table. You can see the kids sitting on that table the day we brought it into the house, in one of the pictures here.

I prefer working with hand tools as much as possible, rather than power tools, due to the noise and dust they make. While on a farm there are always things which need making and mending - Right Now - when I'm able to devote time to personal projects, the shop is a much quieter and more relaxed place.

Here is a link to some photos of my shop from 2013 - before being transformed from a general farm maintenance and fabrication shop, to a woodworking shop:

I'll get up some photos of the shop *now*, after I get time to finish re-arranging it, and give it another thorough cleaning!

Rachel is a stay at home, homeschooling mom who does the sewing and most of the cooking, and has been married to that guy for almost 20 years... and keeps putting up with me for some reason... She is my best friend and biggest fan, along with being a wonderful sounding block and idea-bouncer, and I am terribly lucky to have found her.

Together, we work to create unique and high-quality items that we are proud to offer to you, here and in person at craft shows in central Oklahoma and north Texas.

Thanks for stopping by, and please come back soon!

  • Rachel Hedges

    Owner, Creator, Designer

Wife and Home-Schooling Mother, Rachel is the beauty behind the operation. She has taken care of the family for nearly 20 years when Brad was away, and continues to amaze us at every turn.

  • Brad Hedges

    Owner, Creator, Designer

Rachel and I opened Hearth and Homestead with the hopes of allowing me to stay at home and spend more time with the family that I have been away from all too much over the past 25 years.

  • The Hedges Kids

    Assistant, Creator

We couldn't do this without our five wonderful children. The older girls help with some of the simpler ornaments, along with helping clean it all up. The twin boys are into everything! Life would be terrible without them.

  • Sampson

    Guardian

Our Livestock Guardian Dog Sampson (Sam) is also a key member of our team. He lets us know when the Mail or UPS truck is here, keeps the critters safe, and hasn't allowed a coyote within a quarter mile of our place since he assumed his duties.

  • Homemade Pizza

    Gastronomic Delight

We *love* making homemade pizza. I make the dough 2-3 days before cooking, to allow the yeast and flour time to get cozy, the beer and honey to spread their love around, and then - oh, baby - when we bake it... "Aaahh!!!" (That's an angel chorus) :-D

Welcome to Hearth and Homestead! Please allow my wife Rachel and I (Brad) to invite you to browse through our offerings and attempt to win your hearts with our handmade wooden products.

We want, more than anything else, for you to be completely satisfied with your purchase from us. We work hard creating everything we sell, and we know you work hard for your money. It doesn't serve either of us to be unhappy, so please - if you're not COMPLETELY satisfied with your purchase, contact us so we can make it right.

On the other hand, if you are happy with your items, as we hope and suspect you will be, we ask you to take a moment and leave some feedback as a review, so other prospective buyers will know we care. :-) Thanks!

Shipping
We try to be Green - we reuse clean boxes, bubble wrap, air pillows, packing peanuts and newspaper for packing. Besides being good for the environment, it also saves you the buyer money, when we don't have to pay for as many packing supplies.

Each listing has a processing time listed. We try to ship as quickly as possible, and normally get items out in the very next mail pickup day. Occasionally we need to delay by a few days, because of bad weather when we can't stain or paint, if the kids are sick, or if we get more orders than normal and get backed up a little. If we're ever unable to ship by the date specified, we will notify you in advance. You will receive a shipping notification from Etsy with a tracking number when your item is ready to ship and you can track it online from then on.

We apologize if on some of our items, the shipping rate seems excessive, but the fact is our items are solid American Hardwoods for the most part, and that's just plain heavy. I do want to be clear, however, that we often lose money on the shipping, and try to never charge more than the actual amount for postage and packing materials. We take every opportunity to reduce those charges, trying to size our products to fit in standard boxes, modifying boxes to reduce the size and cost of postage, etc., but in the end, we're all at the mercy of the various companies which transport our goods. Sorry!

Priority Mail is used whenever possible, but occasionally when shipping long distance, Priority Mail is much more costly than the shipping amount charged. In that case, your order will ship Parcel Post (Parcel Select). If you are concerned about delivery time (Before your item ships) please consider selecting the shipping upgrade option, available on our larger items. Smaller items are normally already shipped Priority.

Refunds and Exchanges
We're sorry but we can not offer refunds.

If we have made an error on your order, or if we have messed something up, then in that case we will make sure to get it right for you, at no extra cost. We absolutely want you to be satisfied with everything you purchase from us.

If an item is broken in shipping, we will work with you on an individual basis to make sure you are satisfied, normally shipping out a replacement once we've been contacted and we figure out what has happened.

If a mistake is made on an order, due to an error on the buyers part, a new invoice will be sent and must be paid before a new order is made and sent out. We will try to work with you to minimize the additional cost, especially if we can re-sell the original item and it is returned in usable condition.

If you ever have any questions or think you need an exception to these policies, please just contact us at:
