About

I live to create art.

My brand is all about embracing the beautiful progression and randomness of nature. Akin to the Japanese tradition of Wabi-sabi, I love my work to reflect life. Tarnish on the various elements that make up my work and transparency in my bone items are welcome elements, and time can only further my vision.

After graduating college with my degree in Digital Arts and Design and spending quite a number of years in the graphic design industry, I decided to invest money into my own studio so that I could stay home and do what I love. Thus, Heatherfish was born.

While I started originally with traditional mediums, I have now branched out to work with polymer clay, acrylic, wire, precious and semi-precious stones, wood, horn, bone, and found or up-cycled items.

Years ago, upon dreading my hair, I discovered two things: Firstly, there were not a whole lot of dreadlock accessories that really appealed to me. Secondly, the dreadlock accessories that did exist at the time were either too expensive or had design elements to them that snagged my dreads. At that point, I started to make my own accessories, and they started to catch the attention of those in the dreadlock community. This eventually inspired me to open an Etsy store so that I could share my designs with the world.

Every design in my store is hand made, one at a time, by me with the up most love and care. All the designs in my store have also been tested by me for ease of wear, quality, and durability. Because every item in my store is a hand made work of art, no item is the same, and no item is mass-produced. While I do my very best to send your item as quickly as possible, I also ask for your patience and understanding in regard the art and creation process.

Thank you very, very much for supporting the independent art community!! :)

Shipping
Processing
--------------------------
Processing time is the amount of time I give myself to make and package your order. Processing information varies based on design and can be found in each listing.

To be fair to all of my customers, I fill every order in the order in which it was received. However, if you have a deadline and require your items sooner, please contact me. I will do my very best to accommodate.

Domestic Shipping
--------------------------
For shipping within the USA, I ship your order via USPS. Shipping options that are available upon checkout are:

First Class(3-5 business days)
Priority(1-3 business days)
Priority Express(1-2 Business Days)

Please note that these are USPS estimates. Packages can be delayed during peek and other busy times of the year, i.e. Christmas.

International Shipping
--------------------------
For international orders outside of the USA, I ship via USPS First Class International. All items shipped out of the united states have the possibility of being placed in a customs hold in your country upon arrival. For this reason, I request that you please allow 2-6 weeks for your item to arrive. Please note - Buyers are responsible for all VAT, import taxes, or other fees required by their government.

***Important *** I cannot and will not falsify a customs form to help international buyers avoid taxes and fees. I am not legally allowed to ship items as a "gift". Falsifying customs declaration forms in order to help a Buyer avoid these taxes and fees is against the law, and comes with a punishment of up to $10,000 USD with the possibility of up to 5 years of imprisonment.

If you are in the USA and you would like to purchase a gift for a friend or family member outside the USA and you don't want them to have to pay customs fees, it is my recommendation that you have the item shipped to your residence first so that you may ship the item legally as a gift from your residence or local post office.

Additionally, If an item has been returned to me because it was not claimed, customs fees were not paid, or it could not be delivered because there was no one home to claim it, I will refund for the base cost of the item but not original shipping cost. I would also be willing to re-send should the customer wish to cover the cost of additional postage.

Incorrect Addresses
--------------------------
Please note that I can only ship to the address provided to me by the buyer. If the address that has been provided is incorrect, and the package is lost due to this circumstance, no refund can be made. Please note that I cannot see billing addresses. I can only see the shipping address provided by the seller at checkout, and I can only print a label for that address.

In the case that the package is sent back, and the item is in it's original undamaged condition, I will refund the cost of the order excluding the cost for shipping, or in the case of domestic shipping, I may be willing to consider re-shipping the order as a courtesy. This re-shipment option will be determined on a case-by case basis at the discretion of the seller.

Please make sure to always DOUBLE CHECK YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS before completing your order... especially if you are paying with Paypal.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my dreadlocks or braids?

For information and tips about how to measure the size of your dreadlocks, please see my video tutorial. Simply cut and paste the link into your browser's address bar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJAjeiDmacE

Gift wrapping and packaging

All of my items come in a customized gift box with a recycled fabric accent and hand drawn art details.

If you would like a specific color wrapping or if you have a masculine/feminine preference, you are welcome to leave me a note in the "notes to seller" section upon checkout, or message me.

I ordered the wrong size. Why can't I return my item?

While I would love to offer returns for beads and other items that do not fit, hygienic laws and regulations prevent me from excepting returns for items that are worn on/in the body such as plugs, tunnels, earrings, other body jewelry, and hair beads. Please make sure to double check your size prior to placing an order.

Many of my items are made per order. This means a large majority of my products are in fact custom items. Similar to when you purchase a ring from a jewelry store, it is your responsibility to know what size you require prior to purchase. This regulation is why I offer custom sizing for free with your initial purchase.

Heather, why aren't your beads adjustable?

I do not make adjustable dreadlock beads because I find that it compromises the strength and stability of the beads as well as the alignment of the design elements. This is another reason I offer custom sizing for no additional fee, as I want you to be able to enjoy your beads for a very, very long time.

While many of my wire designs will bend if forced, I would highly recommend against it. Wire will weaken severely over time with constant bending. To prevent this and to have, strong, long-lasting beads that you will be able to enjoy for a long time, it is best to measure your dreadlocks or braids prior to purchase so that you can order the size that will best work for you.

I love your metal beads, but how can I prevent/remove tarnish?

Although my brand focuses on the natural progression of nature, I understand if some of you are not partial to tarnish. Here are some solutions:

Copper:
My tutorial video about how to remove copper tarnish: https://www.youtube.com/wat

Aluminum:
Non-tarnishing metal in my experience.

Silver:
Always keep your bead or necklace in the bag I provide when you aren't wearing it. In addition, I use Connoisserus Cleaner to clean silver. It is effective, affordable, and can be found at Wal-Mart.

Brass:
Brass will tarnish over time. Although I have not tried it, several folks have told me that my copper tarnish removal method works for brass also.

I also provide tarnish removing pro-polish pads with select listings.

Shipping and Processing Information

Processing time is time I have allowed myself to make your item.

Shipping times, are estimates that are given by the USPS, and reflect the amount of time your order will take to arrive once I drop it off at the post office.

For all orders I am actively working on, I print the label and packing slip so that I know who is next in line. All made to order items are processed in the order in which they are received.

Sometimes it may take more than one day to finish up a batch of orders after I have printed shipping labels. In this instance, you may see something like this reflected on your tracking: "Pre-Shipment Info Sent to USPS, USPS Awaiting Item".

All shipping and processing information can be found within each listing.

My dread bead is a little too big, or my stone bead is a bit heavy. How can I better secure it into my hair?

In case you accidentally order your bead a tad too big, I have a few solutions that will allow you to still wear and enjoy your beads:

1. Use a small rubber band that matches your hair color to slide the bead onto. You can find rubber bands like this at Sally's beauty supply.

2. Fit them over two locs. Some of my customers order their beads larger on purpose for this reason... it makes for interesting styling opportunities.

3. Tie them in place with a small bit of sewing thread.

4. Slide them on your loc and then slide a tight bead on after it to hold it in place.

5. Some of my other customers have also used embroidery floss to wrap a portion in the back of the bead to make the fit tighter.. similar to how a ring spacer works.

Can I wear my Heatherfish Creations Jewelry in the shower?

To preserve the color, shine, qualities and finishes of the various elements of my designs, and to make sure you can enjoy them for years to come, I do not recommend showering with them in unless otherwise stated in the listing.

Just like with any other jewelry, exposure to water, soaps, and aggressive force (i.e. scrubbing your hair) can dull out the elements, break down the connections, and cause tarnish over time. This is especially true in regard to stones or crystals, or organic materials like shells and feathers, as soap can cause a film to develop that can dull the luster and shine of these elements.

What are your business or contact hours?

My time zone is Eastern time USA. I work very hard to answer everyone's inquires in a timely manner.

However, If your question or message has gone unanswered for a number of hours during the day, please know that I could be outside working on the lathe, in which case I follow up on all correspondence when I go back in the house.

In the case of late evening or night time inquires(mostly for international customers), your patience is appreciated, as I sometimes do not hear the notifications while sleeping. I will always follow up with you in the morning should this happen.

Thank you all for your understanding!
