About

Inspired new lives for vintage textiles

Antimacassars came into popularity in the Victorian Era. Women spent countless hours crafting these beautiful pieces, each stitch by hand in a manner that no machine would ever be able to replicate. Delicate, beautiful and unique like tactile snowflakes, they are a great example of something utilitarian made beautiful by skilled hands.

Nowadays these beauties are mostly long forgotten, out of fashion and relegated to a life in a hope chest at best. My mission is to find these forgotten textiles and give them an entirely new, glamorous life. The antimacassars I use are chosen for their craftsmanship, quality and design. I take great care to launder them and repair when necessary. Then I dye them with professional grade dyes that form a permanent, molecular bond to the fibers. These dyes will not fade or rub off on skin or clothing. The piece is then finished off with a simple chain and/or clasp and a single, vintage glass bead.

If you came here expecting screenprinted stationery I still have some of that left, but my main focus now is this new line of Antimacassar Scarflettes (aka doily necklaces!). When I opened my etsy shop in 2005 I was a full time textile designer for a large upholstery mill and part time maker of all sorts of screenprinted goodies. When my textile design job ended in 2007 I was lucky to be able to make my screenprinting side business my full time job, but after 5 years of that I was itching for a new direction. I had a laundry list of qualities that this new direction should encompass, but it took me a while to actually land on just the right thing. I am super excited about this new venture. It will marry my love of vintage textiles, repurposing forgotten treasures, finding beauty in common things, dying and experimentation.

This new direction feels a bit like returning to my roots, having received my BFA in Textile Design/Fiber Arts. Much of the dying and techniques I'm using now I haven't done since college so it's been really fun to get back into it.

I can trace my love of art through my family history. My grandmother was a great inspiration to me, she was always creating; my favorites were her unique Christmas ornaments that would spread over the dining room table in various stages of completion. Ballerinas and figure skaters with delicate lacy trim on their dresses, angels with tiny pearls, mice fast asleep in walnut shell beds. Every Christmas she would organize a craft challenge for the whole family. In early December everyone would get a paper lunch bag of odds and ends; pieces of styrofoam and wood, bits of lace and fabric, buttons, cellophane, etc. On Christmas Eve we would all bring our creations to be judged on their creativity. There were silly prizes and voting and it was amazingly fun. Her creativity was handed down to my dad and in turn to me. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in such an artistic family.

Hi! Thanks for stopping by! Recently my creative direction has taken a pretty drastic shift. For the past 9 years I had been making screenprinted stationery and assorted paper goods, but on 2/1/14 I debuted this whole new line of products! Enjoy!
