Spreading the Word one verse at a time

About Heavenwood Gifts
I always thought jewellery-making was a strange pastime for a Christian. I was not curing cancer, devoting my time to charitable works, but to the making of items essentially for adornment. I read innumerable articles about why Christians should not wear jewellery, and statements suggesting that those who did so were vain or parading their wealth.

Then something happened that made me see jewellery in a new way. I was robbed. Burglars broke into my house and stole some jewellery items which had been given to me by family members. I grieved, not the loss of the jewellery, but the loss of the connection with those who had given it. The gifts were not of particularly high value in monetary terms, but their ability to evoke a smile of remembrance or a feeling of connection to those long gone was immeasurable.

In church, I became more aware of the place colours played in the passing of the church seasons – the blues of advent, the gold and white of Christmas, the reds of Pentecost – the colours trigger associations with the biblical stories that give form and shape to our beliefs. The wedding ring on our finger or the cross given at confirmation declares to the world the decisions and vows we have made, but also serve to remind us of the effect of those vows in our daily lives.

Heavenwood Gifts is my attempt to bring together a piece of jewellery as an expression of the Word. Some attempts will be very simple and straightforward, others will be more complex and subtle, but hopefully everyone will be able to find something beautiful that will call to mind a loved verse, a hymn, the message of a church season, or a meaningful gift to uphold a friend. Each package includes the verse or story which inspired the piece and my own reflection on its meaning.

God expresses His love to us, not only in the death and resurrection of his Son, but in the greatest outpouring of creativity ever seen in the colours, shapes and forms of our world, from the complex structure of a snowflake to the grandest of canyons.
God the Creator adorns our world daily…and we are made in His image.

MATERIALS

Glass

I love glass beads because of their colour, beauty, lustre and shapes available. Many of my glass beads are sourced from those places which have a long history of glass-making and are known for producing some of the finest glass in the world. These would include Czech glass, the Italian glassmakers such as Murano, Japanese toho beads, Swarovski crystal and glass pearls, and of course glass bead artisans who can spend considerable time in making just one bead with beautiful colours and patterns. The price of lampwork beads will usually reflect the labour spent in producing them.

What is sea glass?

Sea glass are fragments of glass bottles and other discarded items which have been weathered naturally by sea and sand to give its traditional matte effect or texture and comes in many grades, the ultimate found object. Some colours are rare and highly prized by sea glass artists, but the palette is limited to the colours in which the original item was produced - predominantly white, brown, green, blue and red. There are many artisans on Etsy who work with natural sea glass.

What is cultured sea glass?

Cultured sea glass has developed in more recent times and is often recycled glass which has had colour applied and is then rumbled to resemble the matte finish of true sea glass. Whilst it does not have the value of natural sea glass because it is essentially manufactured and does not have the romantic history, it is cost effective and comes in a wider range of colours and shapes. A great deal of this is currently being produced in China and sometimes India.

What is base metal?

Many of the well-known costume jewellery makers will use materials known as a base metal, commonly copper, brass or zinc alloys as they are plentiful and inexpensive.
These days jewellery makers are avoiding anything with nickel, cadmium or lead, which were commonly used at one time. Approximately 10-20% of the general population is allergic to nickel, and lead and cadmium are poisonous. Traces of nickel can be used in the plating process but this is quite small. Those with allergies should generally stick with sterling silver, 14K gold and above and inert materials such as niobium.

You will often see items advertised now as nickel and lead free and many countries have brought in laws of acceptable levels of these materials in costume jewellery, particularly any item meant to be used by young children and even young teenagers, who are prone to putting jewellery in their mouths.
It should be noted that some people have skin with a high Ph level which will often react with some base metals causing a greenish or blackening of the metal.

What is silver filled? Is it the same as silver plate?

To keep costs affordable, many metal jewellery findings are made of a base metal alloys such as copper or brass. They are then plated with a very fine coating of silver or gold. This will give the appearance of sterling silver or solid gold, but will wear with time and sometimes take on a slight pinkish or yellowish hue of the underlying metal. Some people will replace the affected part or just move on to a new piece of fashion jewellery.

Silver filled or gold filled is a much heavier coating of silver and this will be reflected in the price, but there is still a base metal core. It usually comes as 5% or 10% net gold or silver and can be up to 10 times thicker than normal silver plating. When used with care, silver and gold filled items can give years of pleasure and wear quite well and will often polish up well with a jewellery cloth.

What is pewter?

Modern pewter is an alloy of tin, copper and antimony. Older pewters were often made with tin and lead. Companies such as Tierra Cast who manufacture pewter items in the USA use an alloy known as "Brittania" comprising 92% tin, 7% antimony and 0.5% copper. Once again, it provides a very cost effective element which has the appearance of silver, but without the higher cost.

USA Californian state law requires <100ppm lead content in any jewellery item so, whilst some items may technically not be lead "free", they may still be well within the safety regulations.

A WORD ABOUT CUSTOMS AND VALUE ADDED TAXES
(For information only. Buyers to check all information at their own discretion.)
http://www.dutycalculator.com/ (For your information.)

Each country has its own import regulations based on the value and type of item you are purchasing. These thresholds vary enormously and can add from 5% to 25% of the value of the item you are purchasing. It is the purchaser who is responsible for paying these taxes and duties. You would normally pay these taxes on imported items you buy in a local store, but these will have been factored into the price already.
In this case, you may pay the VAT directly to the Customs Office or at the local post office when you collect your item. In some countries, "handling fees" are also charged by your local postal service.

I do not purport to be an expert, but in the US, I believe the threshold is currently about US$200 and if the price of your purchase is less than this, you may not pay anything extra, other that a state tax in some instances. In the EU, the duty threshold is approximately EU150 (though you may pay VAT on items over approximately GBP15 or EU16). From 1 July 2018, Australia will impose a 10% GST on all domestic sales under $1000 as well. Once you have acquainted yourself with the requirements in your country, you can purchase online with more confidence and know there will not be any nasty surprises.

EU Countries

Do not rely on this information. It is for information only. Check your own country's customs website.
Are there minimum thresholds below which import taxes are waived?
For imports into the EU, there are minimum thresholds below which duty is waived. Duty is not charged if either:
the total value of the goods (not including shipping charges or insurance) does not exceed £135 (€150, or equivalent in local currency), or
the amount of duty payable on a commodity, does not exceed £9 (€10, or equivalent in local currency)

Neither duty nor VAT is payable if the total value of the goods (not including shipping charges or insurance) does not exceed £15.
