To exchange an item, please designate the # of the item you want in exchange. If that item is no longer available, I will give you a store credit, good for 6 months.

Due to the intimate nature of hats, I cannot accept returns or exchanges on hats. To help you choose wisely, I have provided useful information in "I Can't Wear Hats" in the Additional Information section below. I strongly recommend that you read that information carefully. It is what I would tell you if you were in my studio, picking out a hat. If you are still unsure of your choice, please feel free to consult further with me.

Additional policies and FAQs
"I Can't Wear Hats!" or "Choosing a Hat That Makes You Look Great!"

Many people tell me, "I can't wear hats" or "I look awful in hats". It makes me sad because hats are a wonderful way to express your sense of style. In truth, everyone can look good in a hat. The trick is to figure out what style hat complements the shape of your head AND how to wear that hat.

Hats can look good worn parallel to your eyebrows, rocked back to frame your face, tilted at a saucy angle, all the way down to cover your ears or perched on top of your head. It depends primarily on the shape of your head. I make several styles of hats. I will match them up with the different shapes of heads for you.

What is the shape of your skull?
Imagine what shape your skull would be if you were to cross-section it, starting from just above your eyebrows, through the middle of your ears to the nape of your neck. Look at the shape. Is it round? Is it oval? Is it more square than round? You might need someone else to help you imagine this.

Round head styles: Pillbox and Laplander, in particular. The other styles will also work, except Slouch hats. Wear these hats parallel to your eyebrows or slightly rocked back.

Oval skull: Twin Tassel, Slouch, Beanie, in particular. Many of the Pillboxes will also work. The trick is to wear them further back on your forehead, so they frame your face, rather than sitting parallel to your eyebrows. Avoid hats with an inflexibly round, one-piece top, like the Meda. These hats tend to leave a gap on the sides of your head, which looks odd.

More square than round skull: Follow guidelines for oval skull.

These recommendations will help you match my styles to your head. They do not, in any way, apply to anyone else's hats.

You have an idea, now, of what styles to consider. It is time to measure the circumference and depth of your head, to choose the right size.

Measure the circumference of your head like this. Using a flexible measuring tape, start at the center of your forehead, just above your eyebrows, run parallel to your eyebrow, over the opening of your first ear, around the nape of your head, over the opening of your second ear and then back to the center of your forehead, just above your eyebrows. Record this number.

This requires three measurements. Tie a string or ribbon around your head at the place you will wear your hat. Measure from the top-center of your head 1) to the spot on your forehead where you want the hat to end, 2) to the on your ears where you want the hat to end, and 3) to the spot at the back of your neck where you want the hat to end. Record these measurements. If they differ significantly, average them and record that number. if in doubt, send me the measurements. I will help you determine a size.

When you read the item descriptions, you can compare your circumference and depth figures with those listed. Always take into account where on your head you will wear the hat and how snug you want the hat to feel.

How you wear your hair can make or break a hat. The basic idea is to have some hair softening your face by peaking out from the edge of the hat.

If you have bangs, let them frame your face. Brush them a little to the side or wear them straight down. Let them emerge as lace from under the hat.

If you don't have bangs, try this. Tuck long hair behind your ears and bring the long ends forward over your shoulders. Then, for both long and short hair, let a small swoop of hair soften your forehead. You can do this easily by arranging your long locks first, then put the hat down on your forehead, push the hat back a little, then forward again, poofing some of your hair onto your forehead.

Materials and Production
All of the items in my shop are made primarily from materials that started out life as something else. I reclaim wool sweaters, wool and silk garments, neckties, buttons, jewelry and yarns. I wash reclaimed fabrics/fibers in hot water and soap and run them through a hot dryer. I clean all non-fiber reclaimed materials. I inspect all materials to ensure their quality and cleanliness.

Care and Maintenance
Hand wash in cool water and gentle soap.
Gently squeeze. Do not rub vigorously or twist. This will damage the item.
Line dry.
If necessary, use a light iron or steamer, set for the specific fabric.
Handbags may be dry cleaned.

Custom Orders
I happily accept custom orders for items similar to those already offered. You and I will work together to choose what you want made, to set the price and to determine the time frame for completion.

I require that:
1) The item you want fits into my overall philosophy of making wearable art from reclaimed materials.
2) I have the technical skill and the machinery to work with the material you send me.
3) You can describe in specific detail what you want. This includes size, color, style.

Custom orders are very special and often involve significant exchanges between you and me. For that reason, prices for custom orders are higher than comparable in-stock items.

Once we have agreed on the items to be made, the prices, materials to be used, the time frame for completion and the approximate shipping charges, I will send you a confirming invoice. To finalize the order, you must make a payment in full within 3 days of receiving the invoice. Construction of the custom order will begin after the payment clears. When I finish the order, I will notify you, send a jpg image and, if necessary, send a second invoice for any balance due or refund any overpayment.

Nostalgia Custom Order
Carry the memory of a special person with you. Turn your grandmother's wool sweater or your father's necktie into a hat or a mini-bag. The recycled item must be clean, whole, in good condition and large enough for the product you request.

Custom orders are not returnable or exchangeable.

I reserve the right to accept, not accept or cancel a custom order.
