I am not a banner hanger
As a long time activist I was always looking for some big thing I could do to help inform the public on the plight of the oppressed and exploited. I wanted to hang a huge banner off the freeway; planned it, got materials, enlisted others, never did it. The theme that year for the Let Live AR conference was kinda like "what is your part" and I got the message we can't all be banner hangers.
Then I made myself a belt from conveyor belt scrap a factory tossed in the dumpster. My friends wanted one. There friends wanted one... that started in 2008 and I'm still wearing that first belt. The holes still haven't stretched, no cracks, amazing. BETTER THAN LEATHER in all ways possible.
With the help of other activists and vegans in the Portland Oregon community we opened our first store in 2009 and it was well supported even thrived. Unfortunately this was also when I was diagnosed with a massive chondro sarcoma tumor in my head. Woops! Bummer deal man! Here it is six years later (I'm skipping the horror show) and I'm finally back to healthy and ready to work. I've been fighting to keep HELD going all this time and now we are back on track. If you want to know more about thee saga see "The Situation" album in my personal FB profile. I have to warn you the photos are ghastly.
I love telling people about HELD gear cause no belt is more eco-friendly, sustainable, and frankly ethically vegan. 1) We are firstly saving lives
2) By sourcing and creating locally we are preventing more shipping around the globe which is a tremendous carbon burden we just can't tolerate any more.
3) Our methods for Reducing, Re-Using, and Recycling permeate every part of the company and our own daily lives. Even the shipping materials are recycled and upcycled.
4) We are showing others they can live the Vegan lifestyle by seeing a vegan product that doesn't STRETCH, SPLIT, or CRACK like all the other materials. This is a pretty big deal for the baby vegans just starting out.
