That was a line from a newspaper article about me more than 25 years ago, but it has always stuck.

I received my BFA in Studio Art, with a concentration in ceramics, from SWTSU (now Texas State University) in 1992 under Michel Conroy’s instruction and have furthered my studies with Billy Ray Mangham and other artists at the Eye of the Dog Art Center in San Marcos, Texas.

My inspiration comes from a variety of cultures that reside from Austin to San Antonio, the Texas coastline, hill country and piney woods. I was raised in San Antonio and themes of Dia de los Muertos have been present in my work for 25 years, along with symbolism from a wide range of spiritual beliefs and legendary fairy tales.

My ceramic pieces are made from earthenware, raku, porcelain or high-fire stoneware clays and the glazes that correspond with their clay bodies . I create my work from hand-carved block-prints using traditional slab-building techniques.

I am truly fortunate enough to have been a professional ceramic artist for over 25 years and I have developed a line of functional ceramics that I produce regularly, but in 2014 I began to create one of a kind mixed media assemblage pieces in which I combine my love of ceramics with found objects.

The mixed media pieces that I make have more of a human element and still have a natural quality to them, combining Mother Nature to man or more relevant to me, woman. I prefer to take these broken pieces of forgotten beauty and place them in a stronger, more lively environment arming them with a new sense of purpose. My greatest hope is that my artwork moves someone in some small way and that eventually it finds the right home so that it can continue to move them daily.

I believe in living in an environment filled with items that artists have made. It makes my mornings more special when I can drink coffee from a cup that was made by someone's hands rather than a mass-produced cup without personality made by a machine. Likewise, I enjoy seeing something daily that was made by creative hands, minds, and hearts. Thank you for supporting the ARTS!! <3
