About

Carrie Redfern, Herbcraft creatrix, offers beautiful, natural and functional creations... from my heart and hands to yours!

My mission:
To create at the intersection of function and beauty, providing completely natural, enlightening products for your heart, hearth and health.

My story:
I started making beeswax candles 12 years ago. Like almost all the varied and sundry arts and crafts I've tried my heart and hand at, this one came to me by chance (if you believe there's any such thing as chance). I was living in intentional community, organizing the community kitchen. As a food buyer, I had access to a wholesale company that had amazing and affordable and local bulk beeswax. Another craft, why not? So I taught myself to melt and mold all this delicious honey scented amazingness into something incredibly functional. And as things unfold (organically) I began receiving inquiries for shaped and colored candles. I had put myself through herb school after years of self study, so when the request for colored beeswax came, I was prepared to create the healthiest, most sustainable colored beeswax candles on the planet. Out of necessity, inspiration! Over the years, I've developed completely natural/non-toxic botanical dyes that provide the richest, earthiest, most vibrant colors for my beeswax adventures. I do say, these are colors quite worthy of enhancing the precious resource that is the bees' tireless labor of love.

Welcome to herbcraft, a place for all things herbal...

This store reflects some of my strongest crafting passions. I have been researching, experimenting, formulating and dabbling in the herbal arts for over 10 years. The herbcrafts you'll find in my store are all handmade, and have been custom formulated with the highest quality organic, sustainably wildcrafted and fairly traded ingredients available. I am blessed to live in Sonoma County, California, which is widely regarded as an herbcrafter's haven. I grow and harvest many of my own ingredients, source ingredients locally, and support business with integrity and high quality products.

My intent is to create a store that is eco-friendly and elegant in it's connection with nature.

Whenever possible, I will ship items in reused, repurposed or recycled packaging. The gift boxes I purchase are made from recycled materials, and I will let you know all these details in the individual listings.

Education is a passion of mine, so I'll almost always include an educational write-up, care instructions and/or usage guidelines with your order.

Pregnant or nursing women, hypertensives, people taking anti-coagulants (blood-thinners), diabetics, and/or anyone else with a serious medical condition should consult their doctor before using any herbs.

If you are going to use herbal remedies, please educate yourself first and do so safely and responsibly. For more information, please refer to the Botanical Safety Index by the American Herbal Products Association.

**Beeswax candle care**

Always use an appropriate container for your candle, for safety and to avoid unchecked wax dripping. Avoid drafts if possible.

Trim wick to 1/4” before lighting, AND KEEP WICK TRIMMED TO 1/4" WHILE BURNING YOUR CANDLE. This is very important, beeswax candles need to have their wicks maintained throughout the burning process. They are not like paraffin candles, which will just burn and burn (due to additives that assure they will do so) and "self trimming" wicks. If you check out the wicks on a paraffin candle vs a beeswax candle, you will se they are quite different. Beeswax candles have much larger 100% cotton wicks, which help deliver the beeswax to the flame. This is the only way to wick a beeswax candle because the unrefined beeswax is more dense and burns slower and at a different temperature than paraffin.

If you leave a beeswax candle on it's own, the wick will become too long and it will "burn out." Here's why: the wick will turn to ash at the top, where the flame is concentrated, and will no longer be able to deliver the wax to the flame, and the flame will go out. To keep that flame going, that top ashy part has to be trimmed off throughout burning, and EVERY TIME YOU RELIGHT YOUR CANDLE.

This is true of every beeswax votive, specialty candle and tea light in my shop.

Bottom line: beeswax candles are a bit more work, from start to finish. But in my opinion, they are worth it. If you practice a bit of wick maintenance, you will achieve the maximum burn time for your candle.

Enjoy!!

**Botanically Dyed Beeswax Candle Care**

As beeswax ages, a white, crystalline substance will appear on the surface. Don't fret, it's not mildew, it's called "bloom" and it's actually a completely natural occurrence and a sign that your beeswax is really pure. It doesn't affect the quality of the candle or the burning of the candle. With regular beeswax candles, most people just leave it alone, feeling that the "bloom" gives the candles an antique appearance.

However, you may find that it compromises the color of your botanically dyed candles, so you can remove it by gently wiping with a dry cloth (for solid candles such as votives, pillars). For candles with texture, place in a warm and sunny window or by heat the candle lightly with a hair dryer (for textured/shaped candles like floaters, flowers).

To do this, place the candle on a piece of paper, and turn the hair dryer's setting to warm and low. Blow dry the candle, with the dryer a couple inches from the surface. Heat evenly. It is best not to move the candle after you have started heating it. You may notice the color starting to change (it gets lighter). This is only temporary. You will be melting the candle slightly, and it will need time to cool and harden again. At that point, you will find that you have burned off the bloom, and restored the original color and glossy texture to your candle. Repeat if necessary.

**Beeswax FAQs**

How do beeswax candles relate to herbalism?

Honeybees are some of the original herbcrafters, transforming the nectar they gather from the flowers of vegetables, trees, herbs and weeds into nutritive, medicinal and practical compounds not produced by any other species on the planet. Here are the 7 products of the Hive: Honey, Beeswax, Propolis, Royal Jelly, Bee Venom, Pollen and Pollenation.

Where does your beeswax come from?

I source my beeswax directly from local beekeepers, from both urban and rural beekeepers. There are often slight discrepancies between different batches of beeswax, both in color and fragrance. I like to include this information in my item descriptions, if possible. All the beeswax I use is high-quality wax produced by conscious beekeepers.

I also use white beeswax which is sourced from North American apiaries. The white wax I use is cosmetic grade beeswax that is decolorized using sun-whitening methods and filtered to remove impurities. My white beeswax is never bleached! The color may vary from white to off white.

How is botanically dyed beeswax different than other colored candles?

I use botanicals to produce the colorants for my colored candles. I create herbal extracts to dye my botanical beeswax candles and these herbal dyes are completely natural and totally safe to burn and inhale. The herbs I use for my dye extracts are organically grown or sustainably wildcrafted/fair trade.

These are the only botanically dyed beeswax candles on the market.

Why choose botanically dyed candles instead of other colored beeswax candles?

The beeswax colorants used in the industry are synthetic, and even though they are considered safe, they are synthetic nonetheless, and compromise the healing quality of burning pure beeswax.

Why should I burn beeswax candles instead of regular candles?

Paraffin candles:
Paraffin is bleached, textured, colored and scented using carcinogenic chemicals.

Beeswax candles:
- Clean the air. As the candle burns, it produces negative ions that circulate in the room and attract pollutants.
- Neutralize pollutants, such as dust, odors, mold, bacteria, viruses and other toxins.
- When beeswax candles burn, they produce a multi-level vibration that calms the inner senses. This vibration can be observed in the glowing halo surrounding the flame.
- It is said that burning a beeswax candle in the bedroom for 30 minutes before going to sleep will result in a more restful sleep.
- Beeswax candles will sweeten the room with the pure scent of honey.
- Burn longer than paraffin wax.

How can I support honeybees?

Honeybees are in an international crisis, and in so many ways, our survival as a species is tied directly to their survival.

Buy high-quality bee products. Support your local beekeeper, or better yet, become one!

Honeybees require only 20' of space in front of their hive to flourish. Urban beekeeping is becoming one of the best sources for honey and beeswax, is lower in pesticides than honey and wax from rural areas and is completely sustainable in tight quarters, on rooftops, and in the small “yards” that urbanites have access to.
