About

A Love of Vintage Books

I love the hunt for that perfect vintage book - you know the one with the embossed cover and thick, deckle-edged pages. Maybe there’s an inscription in the front, or a quick flip-through reveals a long-forgotten note or pressed leaf. Sometimes the hunt is as satisfying as the find. I once spent a rainy afternoon in a Winnipeg used book store, sorting through a huge pile of unopened boxes - boxes that the nobody had even had a chance to unpack yet as the shelves were already overflowing with an eclectic assortment of books. The store owner was quite impressed with my foraging and rewarded me with some great discounts on my finds.

People are often appalled at my eagerness to dismantle what they assume are valuable antique books. But here’s my reasoning (and my librarian-husband will back me up on this): there are millions of books out there, sitting on shelves, contributing nothing to society except being dust collectors because someone decided that the book was old, therefore it must be valuable. For me, the value of a book is calculated in how much joy it brings and a book rarely does this sitting on a shelf or stored in the attic. So I say unless you’re certain you’ve got an author-signed first edition, give a book a new life and incorporate it into your mixed-media art, or frame a pretty page from it and hang it on your wall, or use it for confetti at your wedding. Don’t let a good book die a bad death.

I'm a mixed-media artist who loves to incorporate vintage paper into her work. Once I realized that my personal collection of vintage paper had outgrown my ability to ever use it in my lifetime I decided to offer the excess through my Etsy shop.
