Hey Mama Wolf yarns are made from organic sheep wool and hand-dyed with natural dyes. They are locally produced and support small sheep-farms in eastern and northern Germany. I use mostly plant material which is organically grown or I go foraging for them in the Berlin-Brandenburg wilderness. I use exclusively environment friendly substances in the dyeing process.

About

Natural dyed organic wool made in Germany

Hey Mama Wolf produces plant dyed regional produced yarns for knitting, crochet work and weaving. The wool is sourced from various small sheep farms across Germany, preferably from monitored organic livestock farming. It is washed in a fibre-friendly, environmentally safe way using only soap and then spun in the Czech Republic. The yarns produced in this considerate way are hand dyed with dye plants and plant dye extracts. The colours are grown organically and predominantly sourced in the region of Berlin/Brandenburg. We keep finding new methods for reducing the level of energy consumption during our dying processes and we do not use any poisonous additives which might otherwise be used when dying with plants. With this focus, our process of colouring the yarn takes a little bit longer than usual, which means just like slow food, our product is slow yarn.
My name is Jule and I am a textile designer. I started Hey Mama Wolf to create a yarn that is locally and organically produced where I live, in Germany. A lot of wool from the sheep here is a by-product of meat production and considered waste. Instead of using this great wool, we import the superfine Merino from far far away which is produced under questionable circumstances. While using my passion for natural color and plants I want to give this great local material a new appreciation.
Hey Mama Wolf by the way is also a song by Devendra Benhart. A great one. My variegated and speckled yarns all have the names of songs i like.
I hope you will enjoy knitting with Hey Mama Wolf Yarns as much as I do.
