Highland Colours

My business is 'Highland Colours' and my name is Sarah Matthess.

As a fibre artist I try to use locally grown wool and dye plants in most of my items. Some of those plants are collected from surrounding areas, and some, like madder, coreopsis woad and weld, I grow in my own garden.

I have been spinning, knitting, weaving, and dyeing for 40 years whilst raising my 7 children and have also taught hand-spinning and dyeing at a local college and worked on commission for shops over the years. But now with new opportunities online, I'm thrilled to be able to market my craft from home, to a wider audience.

My first exposure to hand-spinning was aged 4, at a re-creation day in Canada called 'Pioneer Days' where I stood mesmerized watching a woman card and spin some green wool. I never forgot that, and later in my teens, I purchased a drop spindle and taught myself how to spin. Everything else that I do with fibre just grew out of that.

For more on my work please visit my youtube channel. I'm adding to my channel periodically, so you may want to subscribe.

I'm pleased to be able to add that all packaging in my shop is now completely plastic-free.
