A HipCricket Finds Her Feet!
My story is much the same as many an artist trying to make a 'go' of it. For many years I floundered around, trying to find my niche. I could be the poster child for "stay in school, kids"!
I tried everything from working as a Bartender in Toronto to being a Mascot for Black Diamond Cheese (the Parmalat Mouse). From editing copy at the Canadian Press newswire service to a short term as a Park Ranger at the Joshua Tree National Monument in California's Mojave Desert. But I always came back to my artistic roots. Drawing, painting, writing stories and poetry and creating crazy jewelry from recycled parts. Now days they have a word for it. They call it 'up-cycling'.
In 1986 I moved back to Toronto and into a housing co-operative for people who are actively persuing a career in the Arts. I have never left. The support, networking and affordable housing made it possible, for the first time in my life, to breathe and grow. Grow roots. Try new things. It afforded me the opportunity to become my own best friend. And an entrepreneur, of sorts!
It was my sister who introduced me to etsy. I had never been online before. Never owned a computer. In fact, as recently as June 2011, I could never have envisaged such a thing as having my own online shop! So, once I saw the possibilities, I jumped at this chance to get my work out there, to be seen by the public at large and Bonus!!! Etsy had an area for Vintage! Now that possibility had me hooked!
For the past few decades...(without trying to date myself here) I have amassed a truly voluminus collection of vintage sparklies! Remember, at the beginning of this story, I mentioned being part MagPie? - lol So, with my collection sprouting out of every drawer (my sister calls it the magical sock drawer) I decided to pare down my collection and began the HipVintage section.
This is where, at the moment, I seem to have found my niche. Partly because I love storytelling and partly because I am attracted to sparkly items, I always paid alot of attention to the pieces in my collection. The make, model, era, design aesthetic. Everything has it's own story to tell. And that is what really makes my crickets sing!
So, there it is. The story of my shop, HipCricket on etsy. Selling original art, cards, jewelry and excellent Vintage items. I hope you enjoy the stories they all have to tell and I hope to make them a part of your own story too!
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Universal Go To. Just Ask Andrea!
I have always been attracted to things which sparkle. My friends and family make the joke that I am part scottish, part french and part MagPie!! I also love storytelling. Putting those two together may seem a far flung idea, but Here I Am!

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalised orders
Communication is Key to a Happy Transaction. I will endeavor to keep lines of communication open between us. Please ask questions. Keep in mind that it takes time to design and create custom artwork, jewelry and designs. Allow for shipping times as well. If this order is time sensitive please note the date required by when ordering so I can assess my ability to meet that deadline. Thank you.
In general, cards and tags will vary in size. Gift tags are between 1" square up to 6"x4". Cards are 4"x6" up to 8"x11". Please see description for sizing on artwork in listings.
Miniature means miniature! Sizes vary between 2/3" x 1" up to 3" x 3". Again see listing details for specific sizes. Miniature tiles are acrylic jewelry tiles intended for use in jewelry making not suited to framing.
Miniature jewelry tiles will be water *resistant - not waterproof. This means that if worn while swimming or showering, chances are high that the image will be damaged. Please wear with care!
