Rediscovering Florence, one detail at a time
HistoricalDigital is a Florence-based project by Agostino Manca, dedicated to bringing historic cartography into contemporary spaces.
At its heart is the map of Florence by Stefano Buonsignori: a work whose streets, buildings and fine details invite you to look closely and keep discovering. My work on the image combines patient digital restoration with a manually coloured digital interpretation. The colour edition is developed by hand in the digital artwork; it is not a print painted individually after production.
The collection brings together restored monochrome, manually coloured and photorealistic interpretations, with an emphasis on large formats that give the detail room to breathe. The complete composition and its original proportions guide the print sizes.
The photorealistic interpretation explores light and spatial depth within a flat image. It is part of the same ongoing exploration of Florence's architectural heritage.
Behind this project are research, careful observation and many hours of detailed work. My aim is to create prints that reward a closer look, for people who love Florence, historic cities and the art of mapmaking.
