Hobbs Ceramics By James Hobbs

I have been a 'maker' of sorts from early childhood. Always building with whatever I could find whether it be cereal boxes, toys or trinkets but my love for clay started in my senior school where I was first introduced clay as a medium. We were introduced during a term and I fell in love. the way you could manipulate, change, mold this material lit a fire in me that from the first day, I wanted to pursue.

I developed my studies in college where I embraced all forms of three dimensional design and specialized in ceramics. As a late teenager my early work was very sculptural, expressive and narrative driven, quite a stones throw away from my current work.

Once college had finished I undertook a BA (Honours) degree at Cardiff University, Wales where I spent three years exploring everything pottery and 'Hobbs Ceramics' as it is today started to form. I continued on my sculptural journey and focused on the Japanese Raku firing technique but was always frustrated that the sculptural forms from Raku could never be used the same way as functional ware.

Once my studies were had finished I decided to start over, I had never really experienced a potters wheel whilst at university (which may have been a better time to learn) but purchased one,as a novice and built my first studio. From here I started to teach myself to throw. Fast forward to 2020 and my work continues to develop, I create beautiful, hand thrown pottery that continues to be used and loved internationally and for that I am most grateful. The future can only get better as I continue to push my craft into new realms.

Additional policies and FAQs
FAQ:

How do Custom Orders Work?

The Listing should have an image of what the custom work will look like, Please use this as a guide to decide and contact me if you need any further information to decide.

How long to Custom Orders Take?

Depending on the piece 1-5 weeks is the usual due to drying and firing times. It takes a minimal amount of time to produce a mug yet it usually takes 1-2 weeks to dry and a total firing time of around 30 hours!

What Can I put on a Custom Order?

I use a standard typeset to imprint into the specific areas of custom work, small messages are able to be imprinted depending on the size of the piece. I recommend 8 to 12 letters as a standard.

I haven't received my Purchase?

Please get in touch if your item hasn't arrived, I send everything via Royal Mail 2nd Class which takes around 3-5 days to the UK Mainland and international standard which is usually 4-6 days.

I live in the US But would like to ship to a UK Address, is this possible?

Yes of course, send me a message with the address and I can refund the UK shipping cost to you.

The Colour is a different Shade?

All items are handmade and glazes vary greatly, if purchasing a listed piece it will be exactly as shown in the images of the listing, if purchasing a custom piece colours will vary slightly due to the heat work of the kiln. I will endeavor to get the piece as exacting as possible and will never send anything I don't deem suitable.
