Arrived in perfect condition, beautifully and securely packaged, trimmed with a lovely floral button. The tile is at least as pretty as its photos, and communication with Karen, as usual, was top-notch! I'm delighted: thank you very much, Karen.
This was a nice squarish button with a slightly upturned corner. Thank-you Karen for the beautiful button you tied to the package . It was stunning and much nicer than the one I actually purchased!! I would love to see more of these beauties on your site!
Button it up and smile
It may seem strange that I do not knit or sew but love making buttons! I have been making ceramic buttons for about 6 years now and my designs have developed over that time and will continue to do so as I experiment with new ideas and techniques. I have to be completely honest and say that I do not think about the practicality of them when I am in the throws of making them....I purely think about the overall appearance and the feeling that I want to get across. At first I only used texture and colour to convey what I wanted but now I incorporate images, text and sometimes real lace or threads. The use of different clays can change the way a piece appears, not just aesthetically but also how a person reacts to it...the texture, the weight, the luminosity etc. I purposely want some buttons to look fragile and delicate and others to appear old, used or loved so the choice of clay can be important.
My inspiration for making buttons came whilst I was doing my design craft degree as although the degree involved textiles, metals and ceramics it was working with clay that I enjoyed the most. I often made little sample tiles to experiment with texture and then one day I had the flash of inspiration to make them into usable pieces....buttons! I can remember going into a small gallery one day and seeing a dish full of porcelain heart buttons and thinking how pretty they looked but was disappointed that they all looked the same, almost mass produced; so decided I was going make a collection of one off buttons using different types of clay and various pieces of vintage lace to add texture. I was hooked and have loved making my little works of art ever since. My most popular designs are those using my own sketches which is very satisfying but I also enjoy incorporating lots of vintage imagery as I have a thing for nostalgia and romance! My favourite design changes all the time as I try and make each one that little bit different. I still get excited when I open the kiln after the final firing as I never know exactly what each piece is going to look like until that moment.
