i'm now offering crochet PDF patterns as well as finished goods. hook up your own *hodge podge* original design!
*hodge podge* is an ever-evolving collection of one-off home-grown pieces, including women's clothing and accessories. all pieces are hand made by me, and no two are ever alike. i believe in making from scratch, mending, repurposing, and leaving the tiniest footprint possible... wouldn't you like to wear something hand made with love??? i welcome custom orders too; just send me a convo.

5 out of 5 starsThe book is great though a bit beyond my (beginner-est) skill level. I look forward to growing into it.

5 out of 5 starsJust what I was looking for! I'd already started Cal Patch's drafting class on creative bug, but was itching to see more and am not disappointed.

5 out of 5 starsLove, love this dress. It's SO comfortable, and wearable. It's just perfect. The only problem is that I'm spoiled for other clothes now. I really only ever want to wear this! Thank you, Cal!!!

the most classic, seasonless, essential piece: a short-sleeved undyed linen smock dress
-
here's an assortment of *hodge podge* smock dresses in action! as you can see, they fit a variety of body types.
-
handwork details, such as a crocheted yoke on a dotted swiss smock dress, are my signature.
-
i make solid, printed and doily-stenciled leggings. so comfy, you'll never want to take them off!

this is one of my crochet-yoked smock dresses, paired with my hand printed leggings.
practical, modern handmade clothes for real people
i've been making my line of one-off pieces since 1998 when i opened my shop, Patch 155, on the Lower East Side of NYC. i figured i could commit to the label *hodge podge* because it would allow me to do almost anything, and i do like to dabble! i sew, crochet, draft patterns, embroider, spin yarn, knit, dye and print, and like to utilize as many of these processes as possible in one garment! i prefer to do things the old-fashioned way to create work that could never be mass-produced.
in my twenties i worked as a designer in the fashion industry, but was disenchanted with the reality of how garments are made so cheaply in factories overseas. i saw that the higher i progressed in that world, the less i would actually be making or designing. with that realization, i left and opened my own shop. it was there that i began teaching, first crochet and then sewing. after 4 years of shopkeeping i closed the store and opened one of the first indie craft schools in NYC. from there i began teaching at yarn & fabric shops and design studios around the city, and eventually wrote my first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes.
after 18 years of big city living, i finally escaped to the mini-farm of my dreams in the gorgeous Catskill mountains of New York. my studio has windows on three sides so i can see my chickens running around as i work, in addition to deer, hummingbirds and other wildlife. i love making custom pieces for people that they will wear in their daily life. i hope i can make something for you!

Owner, Maker, Designer
i have always been a Maker. as a kid i painted rocks and made woven ribbon barrettes, and sold (er, more like tried to sell) them door-to-door in my hand-painted wagon. now i make one-off artisanal handmade clothes that i hope will become heirlooms.
