About

Hand-drawn, hand-cut papercuts and products – Holmes-made with love!

From my studio workspace in my little house in the Yorkshire countryside, I create hand-drawn and hand-cut papercuts. My work includes original pieces, bespoke commissions and a range of printed products; and my delicate style is highlighted by my choice of bold, bright colourways.

After the birth of my daughter in 2010, I used my time away from my role as a magazine editor to get back into creating art. Papercutting caught my eye and appealed to my profoundly perfectionist nature. The challenge of creation, the form’s simple yet unforgiving nature – one slip and hours and hours of work could be destroyed; along with the aesthetic the medium offered – clean lines, minute detail and pristine presentation – engaged my interest instantly. Teaching myself the skills needed for this medium, elements of my psyche – patience, perfectionism, obsession and love – quickly started to inform my work as I carved out my own style; becoming a full-time papercutting artist in May 2012.

The majority of my portfolio is comprised of bespoke commissions which are tailored to each individual client’s exacting specifications and painstakingly produced using pencil, paper and scalpel. Children’s wall art is given a mature yet playful feel by melding the Kawaii influences I love with the ancient Eastern art of papercutting; while my popular personalised family tree design embraces my love of history, combining it with an almost obsessive-compulsive approach to my practice, as hundreds of tiny leaves or hearts are cut from the paper’s surface, brought to life by colour. Indeed, as my style evolves, use of colour remains a constant within my work – no doubt inspired by my early artistic encounters with artists such as David Hockney, Frida Kahlo, Bridget Riley and Paula Rego. I also explore my own ideas within highly accessible original works which encompass my interests in typography, nature, colour and popular culture; featuring quotes, repetitive patterns, on-trend themes and stylised motifs which all reflect my happy-go-lucky persona.

Alongside bespoke commissions and original pieces, I continue to expand my product range by introducing a range of items which I myself know I'd love to gift or to receive; including high quality porcelain mugs, printed notebooks and other beautifully finished items. Offering these products makes my work more accessible and affordable to all, especially since my original papercuts take many hours of painstaking work and there's only me at the helm (doing everything from product photography, accounts, PR, web shop upkeep and customer liaison to drawing and cutting pieces, delivering workshops and dealing with media enquiries!). All of the products in my shop have been handmade in the UK, including my beautiful giclee prints which are created by a small print studio in West Yorkshire, my mugs and notebooks which are printed in Scotland, and my postcards which are printed in Northumberland. It's important to me to support UK businesses (especially independent, small ones like mine!) so I try my best to make use of their amazing services for my business needs.

I hope you like what you discover in my shop, and if you have any questions about my products, method or work, or you'd like to commission a bespoke piece, please don't hesitate to contact me via the 'contact shop owner' button in my shop.

Thanks!
