About

Natural. Effective. Simple. Transparent.

Self-care goes beyond food choices, sleep habits, and exercise. It can be overwhelming to find balance and confidence in all of these areas, especially when the choice of personal care items gets thrown into the mix.

The market is inundated with products full of toxins and chemicals. Anything applied to our skin is directly absorbed into our bloodstream, bypassing our liver- making it impossible for toxins to be filtered out.

Handcrafted in small batches, Homebody Basics uses naturally derived, organic ingredients that have been around for hundreds of years (plant based butters, oils, salts, honey, essential oils)- free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, and chemicals.

What we put on our body is just as important as what we put in it, how we move it, how we rest it. What we put on it can impact our other healthy habits, so we deserve transparency. We deserve products that enhance our well-being, products that work with us, not against us. We spend most of our time in the comfort of our homes, and the personal care and cleaning products we use in it can help or hinder our well-being- and the well-being of those we love! Taking care of "our" skin means yes- me, you... but also our husbands, wives, children, friends, mothers, fathers, etc. Feel confidence in your skin care choices- refreshed, rejuvenated, nourished, healthy.

About Me:
It all started with coconut oil. I experimented with coconut oil-based body scrubs in high school, much to the fury of my parents (note: coconut oil hardens and will clog drains...!). I had been the girl who would drop hundreds of dollars at Sephora on countless products. It was a never ending cycle; I was always on the lookout for those products that would be game-changers... except that the game never changed, and I would be left wondering why nothing was working when I was being so diligent about my personal care.

At the same time, I became interested in ancestral health as it relates to food. My grandparents are first generation Italian; meals are intuitive, made with whole, simple ingredients, with emphasis on sharing it with family and friends. Ancestral health can also be applied to our personal care- what did people do before the mass production of shampoos and lotions and face creams?! They kept it simple, and had the luxury of simplicity in their selection.

Our skin is our largest organ; what we put on our body, even what we breathe into it, is just as important as what we put into it by choosing nutritious food, only the ritual of it is much easier (because sometimes it's hard to resist a plate of spaghetti or a piece of chocolate... never have I faced weakness reaching for a jar of body butter or facial cleanser!). The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database became my new best friend- I did countless hours of research on which products were the cleanest, the least hormone-disrupting, and still, I would be shocked by some of the results. How were products being sold in the U.S. that had substances known to contribute to health and/ or skin issues, known to cause or contribute to the exacerbation of autoimmune diseases?! Being a special education teacher, working with young children, having 4 nieces, many friends with babies and children, thinking about having kids soon myself, I was/am further saddened by this. We all need to be critical consumers, for ourselves and especially for future generations.

I decided to do away with the overwhelm. I would make my own products, knowing with certainty that all of the fragrances, phthalates, parabens, etc. would have no place in my home or my body.

Like anything, this has taken some time. I have seen results- with people being receptive to becoming more aware of their consumption, and with the effectiveness of naturally-derived products.

Our needs are continually basic ones. There are "basic" ingredients in products that help us, that are effective, and there are some lesser known ones that have amazing properties that can boost our well-being further (hello, rosehip seed oil and organic, grassfed tallow). We need to feel safe, nourished, and confident to trust.

With Homebody Basics, it is my sincere hope that these needs are met for you. Thanks for reading :)
