Homegrown herbals: An eco micro-herbal farm in the city
More than 15 years ago I started to learn about herbalism when I came across a wonderful book on herbal healing for women by Rosemary Gladstar. Her simple, respectful approach introduced me to the effective beauty of herbal healing. I still prefer to use her "simpler's" method, using minimal but carefully selected herbs grown organically and locally to promote the body's own efforts toward healing.
Since then I have completed various herbal studies, including master herbalist and chartered herbalist. I provide herbal products to various local midwifery clinics, and have a special interest in creating beautiful products for mama & baby during pregnancy and post-partum.
My husband & I started a micro-farm on 1/3 acre in the city, including large organic vegetable gardens and herbal plots where I could grow what I needed for the small herbal business I wanted to found. On our urban farm we use the principles of permaculture as our guide, and aim to leave this small parcel of land healthier and more vibrant than when we arrived. Part of our goal in the city is to connect with the broader community by providing educational opportunities and tours of our homestead. Since 2007 we have offered a slate of ongoing workshops year-round related to herbal healing, soap making, permaculture, organic growing, and hands-on homesteading activities like bread baking and cheese making - we hope that by offering these opportunities for reskilling, inspiration, relationship-building and transformation we can do our little part to help build resilience as we approach a post-carbon world.
On our property we built a passive solar greenhouse where we grow many of the seedlings used in our gardens. We live in a small eco addition to our house made of strawbale construction and natural earthen plasters. We power our home with 100% renewable energy through a green energy provider. Here is where Homestead Herbals is based! A small homegrown herbal business using herbs grown organically and/or sourced from local organic farms wherever possible. We focus on simple healing herbals for the whole family, but I have a specific love for creating effective products for mama & baby. Here in our city I work with several midwifery clinics and doulas to provide their clients with post-partum healing kits and other pregnancy related herbals.
Homestead Herbals has evolved over the years to include natural soaps as well as healing herbal products such as salves, massage oils, lipbalms and loose-leaf teas.
Every item in our shop is made by hand in small batches with much love and care. I package everything with attention for detail, beauty, and an eco conscience. Products come in recycleable or refillable containers or bags, soaps are wrapped in post-consumer recycled papers. I absolutely love working with herbs, providing effective healing and education for my community. I am happy to share this love through my products on Etsy.
Owner, Creator, Herbalist
I've been fascinated with herbal healing for more than 15 years. Apprenticeships on organic farms & formal herbal studies led me to start my own micro-farm in the city, and a small home-based herbal business focused on natural soaps & herbals.
At Homestead Herbals we create quality handcrafted herbal products & soaps using organic, natural ingredients that provide nourishing, healing effects for you & the planet. We use local ingredients wherever possible, including herbs grown in our own gardens and Ontario hemp oil! Most of our products are vegan, but occasionally we do use local honey, beeswax or goatmilk and these will be clearly labelled.
