Art to hang, art to wear, art to use

Hello! My name is Emma, and I’m the artist and owner behind Hoop and Wheel, a small Philly-based business offering handcrafted botanical embroidery, wheel-thrown ceramics, and block-printed goods. My work aims to elevate the everyday, whether that means getting lost in the details of an embroidery piece, savoring your morning coffee from a beautifully crafted mug, or using a block-printed bookmark special enough to take part in the multitude of experiences that reading evokes.

A lifelong creator, I took weekly painting and drawing classes from ages 10–18. A (mostly) self-taught embroidery artist, I first tried my hand at the art form about 2003 and returned to it for good in 2017. I took my first wheel throwing class in 2014 while earning my BA in art history, and have been a student at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia since 2016. Everything I know about block printing I learned from a friend and from practice.

My embroidery work draws inspiration from the natural world. I stitch the plants I see on Philly sidewalks and in window boxes, the corners of my parents’ plant-filled sunroom, and the plant scenes of my imagination. Commissioned embroideries allow me to explore new techniques and express my work’s common themes in new ways. I form my ceramics intuitively, creating shapes that fit comfortably in the hand and improvising glaze-trailed surface patterns. My block prints focus on nature—but mostly the inspiring antics of my cat, Bridget.

Care instructions

Embroideries are lint rolled before shipping. Dust and lint may collect on your piece after prolonged display; roll a lint roller gently over the surface of your embroidery to remove it. If your embroidery includes any long stitches, lint roll in the direction of the stitch.

I use a heat erasable pen to transfer designs onto my fabric before stitching. If your embroidery is left in a very cold area, you may notice lines reappear (this may happen after shipping in winter as well). Simply blow a bit of hot air from a hair dryer over your piece and the lines will disappear.

All ceramic pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Fabric block print patches are printed with oil-based fabric ink. Wash as needed with cool water and mild soap
