Hello and welcome to Hoot's Gallery - The Art of Johna Gibson Bowman.

I am inspired by nature, mortality, ancestral heritage, astrology and celestial bodies, and a slew of other things and instances too vast to mention. I am also entranced by moments, memories, words, maps, photographs, and what some may call trivial thoughts. Inspiration can come from something as vast as the mountains or as tiny as a speck of sand.

Though my paintings, drawings and mixed media creations vary in style, they are each inspired by a particular moment, feeling or observation. Each artwork is a celebration, whether that happens to be melancholy or joyous. In my abstracts I am exploring the relationship between nature and mortality, the literal and figurative, and synesthetic impressions.

Silk bags, ceramic tiles, coffee mugs, my porcelain cameos and many other items are handcrafted by myself and my husband at our studio in Texas. We have the ability to print custom orders as well and showcase it at the Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly, Michigan every year.

Wow! I am so in love with this deck. I have been using it for about a month and I could not be happier. The cards are absolutely beautiful and easy to shuffle. Spirit definitely comes through quickly and accurately. The oracle book is so helpful with interpretating the animals and I love the little quotes that are associated with each theme of each animal. Thank you so much for the fast shipping and the little gift of sample oil in it!

A beautiful silky bag, versatile and beautiful! The imagery reminds me to slow down, be patient, and enjoy every precious grain of sand/time that passes through the hourglass. Thank you.

About

Abstract, Whimsy, Empaths & Epitaphs...

It was the childhood spent surrounded by emerald woods, cerulean skies, and tanned patches of shaded ground that illuminated my path to art. The nature of mortality and the mortality of nature draped like a cloak over my earliest life impressions gave way to a desire to translate it all onto paper and canvas.

I spent my high school years in the art room and then I went on to obtain my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Two-Dimensional Studies at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Hoot's Gallery was named in honor of my dad, John "Hoot" Gibson and for my love of owls.

I have several styles of working which include abstract paintings, whimsical illustrations, digital collage and painting, traditional and altered photography, cemetery photography and art, and my most recent Tondo and Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Sign inspired Zodiac series.

I love painting and drawing, taking pictures, going to cemeteries & studying gravestone symbols. I never get tired of Antiques Roadshow. I am semi-obsessed with the Victorian and Edwardian eras and I tend to be inspired strongly by them in my work. I'm always searching for the balance of darkness and light.
