Each day I receive a personal invitation into the marvel-land of childhood. My elementary art students teach me to see the small and ordinary as unexpected and remarkable. I feel freed to imagine a more interesting reality and to experiment with materials not found in any art catalog – leading me to ask, “Why not?”

Like piecing a puzzle, my creative process pulls together ideas, mediums, and materials – often using methods and supplies not generally seen in traditional art. Sliced portraits painted on marble wedges and wood blocks, multiple views of a tree texturized with palate knives and plastic wrap, blends of acrylic with gouache, ink, and watercolor – all create a contemporary style that invites viewers to take notice of the ordinary by presenting an abstracted version of what we see every day.

I hope to inspire the viewer to become aware of the “insignificant,” glimpse beauty in the “mundane,” and strive to appreciate life from a different, perhaps forgotten, perspective.

Whether depicting a natural subject such as a grove of trees or matter private as a portrait, my goal is to evoke an emotional response either through what the observer can see or through that which has been left out.
