Bernice, your work is wonderful...service is great...Thank You for the gift!
House of Cards began with a lifelong love of both looking at things-- nature, art, color, line, form, and essence-- and making things with my hands-- jewelry, pottery, prints, photographs, calligraphy, and particularly food and illustrated cards. I've never quite known what to say in greeting cards; that big blank space is a bit intimidating and I've always found it easier to express a sentiment visually, with photographs, collage, and drawings. When I'm designing a card, I start with the mood I want to create and follow through using only the materials I have on hand, such as vintage road maps, pressed flowers, and pieces of ribbon. By limiting the materials I push myself to explore new ways of speaking with them. It's the same with cooking. A quick weeknight meal, thrown together with a few ingredients from the pantry, can become a family classic, and a cultural mainstay. Such cherished dishes reveal the spirit of the time, place, and the people who created it.
I have advanced degrees in design and art history through which I learned to appreciate both the magnificent and the everyday. For the recipe cards and graphic paper goods in my shop, I draw inspiration from the elegant lines and radiant color contrasts of modern design, the pithy subtlety of advertising posters, and the fanciful world of children's books. I like to mix different techniques and media in my cards. I enjoy the immediacy of drawing with pen or pencil on paper, but will finish coloring using digital software to produce the most vivid colors. I also love the texture and directness of vintage photographs. Taken at a time when cameras had already become ubiquitous but still had an air of novelty, they are charming and sincere portraits of the past. Just like old recipes.
