Van Raay is owned by goldsmith Miranda Scott, who has been making jewelry in one form or the other for half of her life. Miranda has been selling on Etsy since its early years, and opened her first brick and mortar store and studio, Alchemy House, two years ago. Van Raay is her mother's family name. She is a graduate of the Jewellery Arts program at George Brown College.

All of our designs are carefully crafted with traditional goldsmith methods in precious metals, with an emphasis on recycled gold and silver, as well as ethical lab created gemstones, including Moissanite by Charles and Colvard and coloured gemstones by Chatham.

We are happy to offer custom designs that match our skill set, and aesthetics as artists. Please contact us if you have a design in mind!

Our Etsy store is "open" from Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm. We like to answer your messages as quickly as we are able, but to maintain our sanity, messages left on the weekend or after hours will be answered during regular business hours (unless urgent)

Returns and exchanges

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
Returns and exchange details
"Made to Order" is defined as an item from my collection with customizations that are available in the listing, such as size, finish type, stone options and metal colour

"Custom" is defined as an item created specifically for a customer that does not come from one of my collections, or is an item with a customization not offered as an option in the listing, such as a specifically requested gemstone.

- Returns on made to order items will incur a 20-30% restocking fee, depending on the item in question and the materials/time that went in to it's creation.

- All other jewellery may be refunded within 30 days if the item is returned in its original condition and properly packaged for shipping. Refunds are issued up to five days after I have received the parcel. Please contact me if you intend to return an item, and I will direct you though my preferred method of shipping. Refunds will not be issued to those who do not do this, as I do not want my jewelry to be damaged, lost, or stolen due to improper packaging.

- Items damaged in transit are not my responsibility, and must be made known to me within seven days of delivery. I leave it up to the Customer to choose to fully insure their parcel at checkout. If the item is damaged or lost in transit and full insurance was not purchased, I will replace the item at cost (50% of retail) once an investigation from Canada Post has concluded.

- Shipping, taxes, and tariffs/duties are non-refundable. It is the Customers responsibility to be aware of any fees their country may impose on imported goods.


~ QUALITY GUARANTEE ~

I take pride in the quality of my work, and will always repair work free of charge, where the damage was incurred through a fault in my workmanship (broken solder seams, loose stone settings, broken ear posts or bails on pendants.) Not included are tarnish, scratches/dents from daily wear, accidents (such as getting your hand slammed in a car door) damage from emergency medical removal, broken chains, warped ear wires, or ring re-sizings. This guarantee is rendered void if my work is brought to another jeweler for repair.
Payment
All credit cards and Paypal accepted via Etsy Payments.

Canadian citizens will have applicable provincial and federal added to their orders.

Order cancellation is possible at any point, but if I have started on your item there may be a 20-30% restocking fee for cancellations to cover any time and materials I have invested.

I have the right to refuse or cancel sales.
Shipping
- All items are shipped Canada Post with tracking and $100 base insurance coverage. It is up to the customer to purchase full insurance during checkout. It takes 1-3 business days to ship within Canada, 6-7 days to the United States, and 11-12 days for some International countries, barring any customs delays beyond my control.

- Ready to ship items are sent out within 1-3 business days

- Made to Order items generally take 3-4 weeks for creation, and are shipped within 1-2 days of their completion. These lead times are subject to change as my order queue fills.

- I do not mark parcels as gifts.

- Custom items are shipped upon completion, customer approval (via photos), and final payments are made. Custom items can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks, depending on how much time is needed for the design process, material sourcing and shipping, and outsourced processes out of my control.

I am not responsible for the following:

- Import fees, tariffs, or taxes imposed by your country, province or state

- Delivery delays

- Additional shipping fees resulting from an incorrectly provided address

- Additonal shipping fees from ring sizings resulting from an inaccurately provided size

- Lost or stolen packages. I insure the majority of my jewellery for $100 coverage only, in order to keep shipping costs to you as low as possible. If you would like your item fully insured, the cost will vary and it is up to you as the customer to select this during checkout. If the item becomes lost or stolen in transit and you did not request full insurance, I will replace the missing item at cost (50% of retail) after completion of a Canada Post investigation.
Additional policies and FAQs
~ FINDING YOUR RING SIZE ~

I suggest visiting a local jeweler to be sized properly. The most accurate reading will come from a sizer with a similar width to the ring you want.

Wide Rings (6mm and up) - size up by 1/2 size
Comfort Fit Rings - size down by 1/2 size

Please do not use printable sizers or apps - most of these are not accurate due to individual printer and screen settings.

There are not many foolproof ways to sneakily size your partner. The best method is to bring a ring you know fits her index, middle, or ring finger to a jeweler to size, or to measure its interior to the nearest millimetre.

~ RESIZING ~

Some rings are more easily resized than others, depending on the metal and the stone. I offer size exchanges on the Zora, Kokiri, and Snitch rings (citrine and topaz) only. All others may be subject to a sizing fee, depending on the type of metal and how much sizing is required. Shipping costs for sizing and size exchanges are the responsibility of the customer.

~ ENGRAVING, PLATING, CUSTOMER PROVIDED STONES ~

I do not offer any of these as a service, or use customer provided gemstones or gold.

~ LARGE RING SIZES ~

Some rings over a size 11 ( size 9 in gold) will have to be specially ordered, which has a small variable fee depending on material. This is because larger sizes require more metal, or may have certain design features that make sizing of an already molded ring difficult without compromising the structure.

~ WHAT METAL IS BEST FOR ENGAGEMENT/WEDDING RINGS? ~

While I will happily make wedding bands in sterling silver, and while silver is much more economical for most people - gold is more durable, so please consider it! Textures do wear down faster in silver as well.

~ CARE AND CLEANING ~

For gunk build up behind gemstones - an old toothbrush with warm water and dish soap should do the trick. Do not use bleach based products. Tarnish can be removed with liquid cleaners approved for gold and sterling silver, but do not use these with pearls, natural emeralds, or opals. Prevent tarnish by storing your jewelry in its own bag or box compartment in a non-humid room (bathrooms are the worst!)

Can I have this piece made with a custom stone, or different metal?

Possibly! Message me with what you're looking for, and I can give you a quote. Not all stones are possible with some of my designs, so it's good to ask! I do not use customer provided gemstones or gold.

I work in sterling silver, 10kt, 14kt and 18kt yellow, white, and rose gold. Any of my designs can be made in these materials!

How do I find a ring size without spoiling the surprise?

There are not many foolproof ways to sneakily size your partner. Usually the best method is to measure the inner diameter of a ring that fits them (preferably on their ring, middle, or index finger) or bring it to a local jeweler, if you're able.

I do not suggest using printable sizers or apps - most of these end up inaccurate because of printer and screen settings.

When in complete and utter doubt, the average woman has a ring finger between size 7-8.

Your turnover times say 3-4 weeks, but I need it sooner than that!

Rush orders, when possible, are available for a $50 fee. This bumps your turnover time to 1-3 business days *IF* I have all materials and stones in stock. If not, it might take closer to 1-2 weeks. The fee does not increase the shipping time.

Please message me before ordering if you need something rushed, so I can let you know if it's possible with your time frame.

Will silver turn my skin green?

Sterling silver jewellery is prone to tarnish, and may also discolour the skin of some wearers. Neither of these mean that the metal is "fake", rather it is the presence of copper in the sterling reacting with exposure to humidity, moisture, and the pH of your skin.

The speed at which tarnish happens depends on a few factors, including the skin type of the wearer, climate, and what the jewellery is exposed to. It can occur faster if you shower, swim, use household cleaning solutions without gloves, live in a humid climate, bake (cooked eggs can blacken silver) and use hot tubs without removing your jewellery prior.

How do Payment Plans work?

Payment plans are available for items that cost $500 and upwards. I am happy to break the cost of the item in to a maximum of five payments, which can be paid as frequently as you wish. I do not ship until the final payment has been made.

If you pick more than two payments, I do not order materials or start making your item until the second payment has been made. It is at this point that my turnover time kicks in.

The order can be cancelled at any time, but will only be refunded in full if cancelled before the second payment. Otherwise a 20-30% restocking fee applies for the materials and time I have invested.

This applies to both made to order items, and custom items.
