About

We want our work to get covered in oatmeal!

Our Story
....as told by Rowan Rose

This is the story of a boy, a girl, some dirt and a dream.

When I met Charlie Hughes in 1997, he was selling his pottery at a show where I was also vending. He had studied ceramics at Penn State University and was now peddling his wares on the road, trying to make a living in the clay biz. I was a self-taught stained glass artist, and selling at art shows was a very occasional thing for me. We quickly became good friends (and I became a dedicated customer), and over the years a long and strange romance ensued.

I proposed to Charlie in 2007 in the very same spot we met all those years ago and we married in the summer (and twice in the fall) of 2008. That's our summer wedding picture over there on the right!

I never thought I'd have the aptitude for clay work, but Charlie patiently taught me "the way of the clay" and now I'm a potter too...and we've been happily covered in mud together ever since!

Our Work

Together we create beautiful functional stoneware pottery for your kitchen and table. We both enjoy cooking and entertaining, and appreciate the warmth that handcrafted pieces bring to our meals. We try to bring that sensibility to our work- making pottery with every day use in mind; light and comfortable but also strong and durable.

All of our work is completely handmade- from ball of clay to finished piece. This is the real deal, thrown one piece at a time on our wheels and finished by hand. All of our decorative elements are hand painted, hand-carved or hand molded from our originals. No decals or mass-produced elements are used.

We honestly love what we do, and are truly blessed to be able to make a living doing what we love. Even after all these years we race down to the studio, like kids on Christmas morning, to peek into our cooling kilns. We are, quite frankly, addicted to clay!

And our business isn't just about selling people some mugs; it's about making beautiful things that become a small part of our customer's lives. We love to hear that our customers have to use "our special mug" for coffee each morning, or that our teapot graces the table at every family gathering.

We pride ourselves in offering fantastic customer service and crazy fast shipping (check out our feedback!) We're happy to accommodate your special requests, like adding gift cards or shipping items to several addresses. First time buyers often become loyal return customers because they fall in love with our pottery AND our customer service. It's not unusual to hear that they are back for more because they're tired of fighting the family for their "favorite" mug or bowl!

Thanks for shopping with us and being part of our little circle of pottery love.

Welcome to the Etsy home of Hughes Pottery! We are a husband and wife team of potters who produce handmade stoneware in our small studio in northwest Pennsylvania. All of our work is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe and is glazed in food-safe, lead free finishes. Because of the hand-made nature of our work, please expect subtle variations in color, texture and size.

All of our work is completely handmade- from ball of clay to finished piece. This is the real deal, thrown one piece at a time on our wheels and finished by our four hands.

Additional policies and FAQs
IS YOUR POTTERY FOOD SAFE? CAN I PUT IT IN MY MICROWAVE? WHAT ABOUT MY DISHWASHER?

All of our stoneware pottery is made for functional kitchen and table use. It's lead-free and food safe. You can put it in the dishwasher, microwave, freezer...even your oven! Just avoid sudden temperature changes, like taking a bowl out of the fridge and putting it in a 350* oven or putting a hot dish into a sink of cold water. This is called "thermal shock" and can shatter your piece. Pieces used in your oven should always be placed in a cold oven so they can gradually heat along with the oven. With just a little extra care, stoneware is very durable and should last for years.

CAN I GET A DISCOUNT IF I BUY MORE THAN ONE PIECE?

We're always pleased when customers are anxious to buy more than one piece of our work! However, we do not offer discounts for regular retail purchases. If you're a qualified retailer interested in carrying our work, please contact us for a wholesale catalog and terms.

I BOUGHT A BUNCH OF STUFF FROM YOUR SITE HOPING TO GET A MATCHED SET BUT ALL THE PIECES LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT!

Everything we make is handmade piece by piece. Due to the nature of handmade goods slight variations do occur. Each glaze batch and each kiln firing also create slightly different color results as well. If you are interested in a set of something, please custom order it and it will all be thrown, glazed and fired together -assuring a better match.

I REALLY LIKE THAT MUG, BUT CAN I GET IT IN A DIFFERENT COLOR?

If we're out of stock on one of our colorways, we'd be happy to make you what you need. We're throwing pots and firing kilns all the time, but it takes many weeks to go from lump of clay to pretty finished mug. We don't offer colors other than the combinations shown on our shop. Please check our listings to see our current glaze palette.

CAN YOU MAKE ME SOMETHING I DON'T SEE?

Other than ordering something in our regular production line in a particular colorway, we are not accepting custom orders at this time.

WHAT IS YOUR CUSTOM ORDER POLICY? DO I HAVE TO PAY UP FRONT FOR CUSTOM WORK?

Here's how custom orders work in our shop:

We discuss (via conversations here on Etsy) the specifics of your order, including the estimated delivery time. Once we all agree on the details, I will create a custom listing in the shop just for you. Once you purchase the listing, we'll get to work crafting your order. Once it's complete, we'll ship it out to you! If you "Like" Hughes Pottery on Facebook, you'll probably even see pictures of your pieces being made!

Turn around time for custom work depends on the item(s) we are making and where we are in our production cycle. In general, your can expect to wait roughly 4-6 weeks for most custom orders.

All custom work must be paid 100% up front before work starts, including shipping costs.
