MY BUSINESS: humblebumbleb started in 2007 at the first Stitch Rock in Delray Beach, Florida hosted by the amazing Amanda of With Sugar on Top. With an assortment of handmade goodies, mostly created on my sewing machine, I set up my booth full of nerves and excitement. Baby girl dresses made from vintage fabrics, retro clutches and a rack of pill box hats filled my space. I had come across a vintage pattern for a pill box hat and thought I just had to make one for myself, embellished with a bumble b of course, and a hand full for said craft fair. As the day unraveled, shoppers and fellow vendors gushed over the petite hats. I was on to something. I went home and began my research on the history of hats in fashion and millinery. From there I came up with a few original designs and found some amazing vintage patterns. Not long after Stitch Rock, the lovely Rob and Corinne of www.threadbanger.com contacted me about doing a tutorial on threadheads on how to make a pill box hat. Who knew, a few minute tutorial on a super diy website, and I was in business. My inbox was full of requests for hats and sincere thank yous for the tutorial. I busily got my website in functioning order and began sewing my retro butt off.
I now have a steady flow of custom orders that I'm always working on and always excited to take more, and I do two to three large craft bazaars a year as well as some smaller shows.
THE HATS: My hats are 100% handmade and sewn, I do not buy premade forms and cover them. Each hat is made of multiple pattern pieces that are hand cut and then sewn together on a sewing machine. I use mostly eco-felt craft felt (which is made of 100% recycled plastic bottles). I love using this product because I get to do my little part of making the earth healthy by recycling and it allows me to keep my prices low. I also use some wool/ poly blend felts for specific color options. My bridal and formal hats can be made out of satin if desired. Pill Box and Flight Caps are lined with a medium weight interfacing to keep their shape. Most Fascinators are not lined so that they form to the head. Cloche hats are two layers of felt. I choose to not line my hats for two reasons. Number one, to keep my prices low. Buying unnecessary fabric to line the hats would require me to raise my prices to make up for the extra fabric cost. And reason number two, comes from my training in ceramics. I was taught that the evidence of human hand and being able to see how something was made, was a good thing. You can look at the inside of my hats and see all the construction and hard work that went in to them. Each hat has two descrete holes on either side that bobby pins slip into to hold the hat on your head (except the cloche style which requires no assistance in staying on the head).
