About our farm

We are a family of 5 living and working together on our farm Laekjarbotnum. It is situated in the South of Iceland not far from volcano Hekla. We have all kinds of animals: 250 ewes, 8 goats, 50 horses, 20 rabbits, 5 chickens, 3 dogs and 2 cats. We also make shoes, paint cars and farm trout.

Lambing season is in May during which we keep an eye on the ewes 24 hours a day, most of them bear 2 lambs. It is great fun to see what colours we get and to imagine what they end up looking like in the fall. In early July we drive most of the sheep from our home fields up into the highlands and release them for the summer into wild and vast pastures. During the next months they roam freely in the highlands far away from any inhabited area and feed on wild herbs and grass which makes the meat especially tasty. It is exciting to see how they develop and thrive, and how wonderful they look when we collect them again in late September.

In the lambs we chose for breeding we are looking for confirmation, fertility, bloodline and wool quality – and even better if they also have a great colour. It is of these lambs that we harvest the lambs wool. We keep them outside in large pastures until it is time to take them into the stable for the winter, and then we shear them straight away, before the wool has a chance to get full of hey or dirty. The double coat of the Icelandic sheep is unique and its wool and its hides have kept the nation warm for a thousand years. This breed came to our island with the first Viking settlers and is still a pure breed, hardy and beautiful.

After taking the sheep into the stable for the winter, we prepare for a months of “honeymoon”, starting in late December. During this time we keep an eye on the ewes and the selected rams and make sure everything works as it should We feed twice a day throughout the winter and watch them chose their place on the trough which they usually keep all winter long. We make sure they feed well and thrive, until yet again another lambing season starts.
