Announcement   Cherry Creek Farm is proud to offer our Purebred Icelandic Sheep fiber: roving, millspun, handspun, and batting.

Icelandic sheep are one of the world’s oldest and purest breeds of sheep. Throughout their 1200 years of history starting with the Vikings, they have remained one of the few multi-purpose breeds, treasured for their meat, milk, and fiber. We started our flock 13 years ago and fell in love with these gentle, beautiful animals! They are raised naturally - lots of fresh air, Rocky Mountain spring water, Colorado premium grass hay, and certified organic vegetable trimmings from our Market Gardens.

Iceland is best known for their wool around the world. The Icelandic sheep's wool is of a dual character: a fine soft undercoat (thel) & a long coarser coat (tog).

Their fiber is extremely soft to begin with and after washing & wearing, the wool "blooms" & becomes even softer.

Icelandic wool is one of the easiest and fastest felting fibers. It also dyes very beautifully, if this is your pleasure.

Beautiful natural tones and colors and ease of weaving and knitting, place Icelandic Fiber in the Premium or Exotic category.

We welcome you to our Etsy Fiber Shop and hope you find our offerings unique and top-quality! Our starter flock of 5 Icelandic sheep was purchased in 2000, just at the right time and place to take advantage for acquiring sheep from the original 1990 Iceland exportation then later in gaining the first semen allowed out of Iceland's finest old sheep farms. Our flock eventually grew to 100 from April to October with the arrival of our new lambs giving us a wonderful quantity of wool, with colored fleece ranging from: white, browns, grays, blacks, and any combination thereof - 17 natural colors and patterns.

After a 5 year USDA supervised program, Cherry Creek Farm became Colorado's 1st USDA Certified Scrapie Free Icelandic Flock! And our lambs won BIG at the 2008 National Western Stock Show in Denver where we introduced Icelandics for the first time - Grand Champion Ram, Mika, and Reserve Champion ewe, Ginger.

First our raw wool is processed at wonderful "green" Colorado Mills, Lonesome Stone Natural Fiber Mill, Granby, and Mountain High Fiber Ladies, Pagosa Springs, where extra steps are employed to make a superior product, free of vegetative matter--a knitter or weavers' dream. Then our very own artisans spin the roving into a 2 ply Sport Weight yarn and set the twist in Cherry Creek Farm's lavender water. Our handspun is available in Adult, Lamb, Combination, Premium & Novelty, as indicated. Novelty Yarn is the first yarn spun by a beginner. It is irregular in size, somewhat chunky, and absolutely unique for that special project.

We thank you for visiting our shop and welcome you back at any time!
