About

How I caught the design bug

When I was little, my father was always building things and tinkering around in our garage. He taught himself how to build and make so many things. He was my hero and I wanted to be just like him. By his side as a child, and later again as an adult, I learned that with enough determination you could do anything you put your mind to.

I read a lot as a kid and had huge ideas as most young people do. I wanted to make a statement, leave my mark, live a creative life surrounded by other creative people and make a difference in the world around me. Art was never encouraged as a profession, so I headed off to the University of Colorado, Boulder to study Environmental Conservation and ended up apprenticing to be a pastry chef instead. As a self proclaimed “tom boy “ and scholarly young adult this choice didn’t make much sense to my family, but deep down I knew I wanted to be an artist or a designer. Being a chef was something I loved. I was passionate about food and the artistry of being a good chef. It required my attention to detail, and consideration of how to feature each ingredient while considering a dish as a whole. I had the freedom to experiment with flavors, colors, and texture a lot like I do now with my work as a designer, using color, pattern, functionality, and overall style. Working in a kitchen taught me personal responsibility, how to work under pressure, adaptability, and teamwork. For many years, I felt I had found my niche in a creative profession. Now I know it was actually the training ground for my current work as a designer. I often say, “Decorating a wedding cake is a lot like designing a bag. You must consider the structure and be sure it is sound before you begin the hours of detailed embellishment that make it more than just an ordinary cake or every other bag.”

Through many jobs and twists along my amazing life adventure I never forgot my passion for art, design and making pretty things. I made a point of learning as much as I could from all the talented people I met over the years and educating myself, like my father, in many creative skills, including how to sew. As life presented me with opportunity after opportunity to pursue this passion I read up on running and owning my own business, took classes, and chances which led me to starting my own business. Today, I live in Oakland, CA surrounded by an incredible community of creative people. I have been designing handbags for 9 years and am the owner and designer behind Ichi-v Handbags. In the spirit of continuing my creative adventure I am currently pursuing a certificate in Apparel pattern making to see how far this road will lead me. I can easily say I am living the life I always dreamed of.
