Retired ELCA Lutheran pastor takes up painting Orthodox Icons!

In 2000 I was privileged to be able to study for 30 days with Orthodox Iconographer Debra Korluka of Stillwater, MN. Though I was working full time and wasn't able to also paint full time, I was definitely hooked on this ancient form of teaching theology in the Orthodox tradition. I learned what I could and when I retired in 2008 I was finally free to work in my studio - which I call Holy Trinity Icon Studio. It's located on the second floor of my carriage house behind my main house in the picturesque college town of Northfield, MN.

I have since been able to study several times with Philip Davydov and Olga Shalamova, of St. Petersburg, Russia who are academy trained iconographers in their tradition of egg tempera. And, I've studied with Deacon Matthew Garrett of Boise, Idaho who comes from the Syrian Antiochian tradition, as well with the internationally known Prosopon School of Iconography when they have been in Minneapolis, MN.

All Orthodox icons are painted either on wood panels or on walls. I make most of my own wood panels. I prefer to work in egg tempera using natural pigments, but acrylic technique is also available to me when an icon is likely to be handled or moved around a great deal. Acrylics have one chief virtue, i.e. they are incredibly tough and durable.

I've painted over 130 icons as of June 2016. As I photograph more of my works I will post them, and the matching prints or greeting cards, on ETSY. I'm the ONLY ONE (as far as I have been able to discover) who offers PARTLY GILDED PRINTS or GREETING CARDS. Look for them to appear on my ETSY site.

I am a retired Lutheran pastor (ELCA) and regard myself fortunate to have the time to study, pray with, and write (paint) icons in the Byzantine Orthodox style. I value them highly, and I hope and pray you do too.

My studio provides me with an excellent shop to write (paint) my Orthodox style icons in the traditional historical manner. I work by myself using either egg tempera or acrylic technique. I do all of my own gilding using 23.5K or 24K gold leaf. I often make my own icon boards including the routing out. Egg tempera is done in the traditional Russian or Italian technique on genuine marble dust and hide glue gesso on fine canvas that is glued to the board. Acrylic technique is used when the icon is going to be subject to a lot of handling.

Returns and exchange details
No refunds on gilded, or plain, icon prints or cards.
Payment
My icon prints or cards are shipped when payment is received. If an original hand painted (written) icon is ordered, and I'm out of stock, please allow 4-6 weeks for the painting to be completed. If a certain deadline is necessary, then that must be negotiated before the work begins. A custom order for an icon that doesn't yet exist, is exactly that ... a custom order that is non-cancellable with a down payment of 50% of the total price, and payment in full before shipping. If you have any questions, please call my cell at 612-702-5111.
Shipping
I ship by USPS or UPS if at all possible. All prints or cards go out First Class USPS. All icons are shipped in bubble wrap and a stout cardboard box. Since my icons are always painted on boards they are not breakable, but they can be scratched if handled roughly upon opening the box. Any claims for damage in shipping must be lodged with the carrier.
